Hey Gang,
What's the deal with these motors? I have a chance to buy a nice 99 528i with a locked up engine. I see these around from time to time with rod knocks or main bearing failures. It seems this one might have a head gasket issue as the owner tells me that there is coolant in the oil. Maybe the head is cracked. I haven't looked at it yet. Anyway looking for the scoop from the bimmercrew. What can you guys tell me? Are these motors junk? and does anyone have one for sale. Used/rebuilt--doesn't matter- I will rebuild myself if you have one.
Thanks,
tohi

these motors are unbelievable. it is the uneducated owner that is usually the issue. you have a few different options, get a used regular M52 or upgrade while you're at it to a M3 M52 which will bolt right in.

good luck..

these motors are pretty expensive. i saw used 4.4L with 150,000miles, and it was for sale for $4000. what makes you believe your engine is locked up? have you tried rotating it manually?

The V8 may be expensive, but the 2.8 is a very durable motor and can be found in many places for reasonable prices ($1500-$2000 with decent miles).
One of the better BMW motors made, IMO.
