View Full Version : weight of oem rims vs. replicas
I was bored the other day so I figured I'd weigh my M Parallel replicas with tires and also my stock double spoke II's. Contrary to popular belief the replicas were lighter than both the 7.5' wheel and 8.5' wheel. The 7.5' wheels are mounted on 225/40/17 tires and the 8.5' are mounted on 245/40/17 tires.
The weight of the M Parallel was 41lbs. vs. 42lbs. for the 7.5' double spoke and 44lbs. for the 8.5' double spoke. Alot of people seem to believe that replicas are heavier than OEM rims, but I guess in my situation this doesn't hold true.

are both sets of wheels running the same tires? cause when i did a test a while ago my factory lightweights with so3's were like 47 lbs. and ACS type 3 19 inch with michelins where 42 lbs. go figure.

Yes. Both sets of wheels are wrapped in Michelin PS2's.

Exactly; tire weights can vary 5+ lbs, so the full wheel+tire weight is pretty worthless unless it's the exact tire w/the exact amount of tread. You can ballpark it by using the tire weights listed on tirerack, however. For instance, the f/r S03 is 25/26lbs, versus 22/23 for Pilot Sports.

Like I mentioned above, both sets of wheels have the same brand and model of tires. The only difference is the sizing. I would've thought an 18's wheel/tire combo would be heavier than a 17' one, especially with replicas, but that just isn't the case.
Regardless, I guess the important thing is that even if the 18' wheel by itself was heavier than the 17', I still have less total unsprung weight now than I did with the stockers. When the rubber meets the road, that's all that matters right?
edit: If anything, the advantage regarding tire weight should go to the 17 inchers, considering they have a few thousand miles on them with less tread than my 18's.

Oops. I wrote 225/40/17 in my original post. What I meant was 225/45/17.
