After about 15+ tack events now I think it is time to try some R-tires. I want to run Toyo RA1 235/40/17 and I want to use these to commute to and from the racetrack, saving the time from changing wheels there. :stickoutt
Should I shave them to 6/32? or just leave them at full tread? I want to use the best of them and don't want to sacrifice too much durability.

are you going to run them on the street between events? Or just to and from the track? If running all the time, I would not shave them, you will need the tread depth when it rains.
If only to and from the track, my understanding is that they last longer when shaved.
You might ask this in teh track forum.

Exactly what Pete said. Shave the tires if you're mostly using them on the track.

If your just driving it to and from the track, I say shave them. I personally use RA-1's for DE's and run them shaved to 4/32nds, but I trailer my car. I guess 6/32nds. is OK. At full tread the tread block is to tall and they squirm around and heat up. You can also flip them on the rims and increase the wear, as they are only directional as a rain tire. They make a good rain tire at full tread. If you don't run staggered rims, I suggest rotating them often. That will prolong their life :)

According to most guys I've talked to, 4/32 seems to be a track standard depth for optimal wear and performance. If he needs to get a thousand more highway miles, I suppose 6/32 would work.
I'd call AIM motorsports in Nor Cal, they are a Toyo dealer and deal mainly in race tires, so they should be able to guide you.

4/32 is 'race shave' depth while 6/32 is 'enduro shave' depth. I've run both in HPDE and suggest 6/32 for longer life.
Can I still flip my Toyos even though the thread is already showing a little on the inside (on one side)? I run quite a bit of camber, and the outside still looks pretty good.
But since the thread is showing, I'm not sure if that affects the overall reliability of the tire. Any comments appreciated. Thanks.

Shave them to 4/32's, they last longer and have a A LOT more grip. The only reason you would not shave them is if you are using them for rain tires or running them in an enduro. Otherwise you will hate yourself for not getting them shaved....
