First off what kind of engine is in a 525i besides the 6cyl?
how hard will it be ti swap it in a 318, what is needed? can get the electronics from a wrecked 525.
How much power does that 6cyl have.

OK, just to be sure are you talking a 535 or a 525? The 535's had the "big block" M30 engine, and while a fine motor, it's doubtful that it would fit in an E36 engine bay due to the slope of the hood. You could cram one into a E30 with a lot of work, and with the amount of torque available, the rear subframe would probably be toast pretty quick. For the 525 there were two flavors of motors in the E34: a M20 and an M50. The M50 would be a straight swap since the motor was offered stock, but you'd have take the computer with it

Why not just throw a chevy V8 up there...........

OK that was dumb.............

How about you throw the 318 in the garbage, and get a 325 or 328 and turbo it. All the sus. work, subframe work, and cooling fabs, and tranny etc. start with sumpthin better.

the way my car is geared, ( 5th gear at 120 im doing 5.5k) With the extra horsepower of the m50 should be faster then a stock 325 from a dig.

and not everybody has money to buy a 328 then buy a $7k turbo kit.

Edit post then drop a chevy V8 in it.

I think the weight of a motor that big will be shittt on the suspension system.

What about a nice e30 with a 2.7 inline 6. I tracked one for a few days and it was amazing. Huge motor in a small light car. It handled great, and had azzloads of torque. THe guy was selling it for $3000, not that is a deal, the car was slightly tuned and could run with a 328 no problem!!!!

I went through the same delima just a year ago. I had a 1993 Chevy Cavalier. It had a 3.1 liter motor, and ran 14's. I did a shit load of work to it, and it was not worth shit. So I just cut my losses sold the crapper and bought my dream car, (well almost 328, dream car M3) This is experience talking, I did sooooo much work to that car. In the end I should have just started with something nicer.

Peace

A stock 325 comes with an M50 engine. You would need to redo your exhaust system as well, because the M50 has a dual exhaust, and your 318 only has single.

It still seems like the subject and the body of your question are two different things. Are you talking about the older 3.5 liter 6-cylinder going into an E36?

What are your goals and why are you considering it?
