View Full Version : Spare Tire

Ok, so doing some work on my car recently and I realized that my spare tire is stock and not like my shitty 17" chrome wheels. After some joking around with my brother about this I started to think that it would be rather useless. If I get a flat tire do I want to bother putting on a different sized tire? Won't that ruin my suspension/alignment and cause me more problems then it's worth?
If this is the case then I'm considering removing it and possibly selling it, it's of no use for me (and I could put my sub/amp setup in there to give me more trunk space :stickoutt ).
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I have a full size spare, that means that I bought 5 wheels instead of 4 when I got my aftermarket wheels. It won't do much harm if you use the spare wheel just to get to a wheel shop but I wouldn't drive on a different sized wheel/tire many miles.

i've read somewhere else on this forum that taking out the spare tire can mess up your handling by making the rear end lighter?? is this true? im considering removing my spare tire too, because i dont even have a jack, its bent and broken, so whats the point of having the tire if i can't use it...
anyone removed their spare?

I guess they say so because the front is already a little heavier than the rear and you don't want to make that difference even bigger.
I have heard that taking the spare off is not a good idea because the wheel is supposed to be there in case of a rear end collision.

It would not hurt the rear wheel drive car to run a spare tire. If you did the wheels and tires correctly it would not hurt the car at all because the diameter is the same. The only difference would be the wheel size but the car can't tell what the wheel diameter is.
