hey guys,
I am trying to do the bypass and i know everyone said to clip the green wire going to the ECU Pin #66. I see pin 66 but the problem is there are two solid green wires :confused :confused . Theres also a green with blue stripe and a brown with green stripe as wel. How do i know which green wire to clip? I was under the impression there was only one green wire not two solid green wires. Any help is appreciated! thx
(My car is a 9/95 M3 which i believe has EWS2).

I am also aware there is a EWS control module somewhere behind the glovebox but i have no idea where it is exactly. I hear u can just cut wires #1 & #3 and join them together to bypass the EWS unit... does that also work?

Solid green wire, the thick big one.

Is there a way to bypass it on OBD2 cars?

Hmm...that's wierd, there was just the one green wire coming out of mine?
BTW, why are you bypassing the EWS?

i think i may just do the EWS unit bypass (pins 1&3) but i don't really know where it is behind the glovebox. any pointes?

Thats what I did and it works fine.
I believe its the yellow plug straight behind the glovebox.

thanks spencer... which plug is is #1 and #3? what color are the wires?
Spencer

The plug should be numbered.
But if not, 1 and 3 were the thickest wires in the plug. I cant remember the exact colors.

IC. You are doing this from under your dash. It is easier to do this from the engine bay, at the main harness plug. Only one green wire there. Under the dash, the green wire repeats itself several times fore and aft of the ews unit.

Nope, you are incorrect.. there are TWO GREEN wires at the ECU plug (4 technically if you could the other green wires with stripes)... so i am now resorting to the EWS module b/c i dont want to risk cutting the wrong green wire.

No big deal ... if you cut the wrong one, just splice it back together :)

Just to double check, pull the module out and it should have EWS markings on it.

what the heck is this EWS?
korto

From BMW site:
EWS II & III
The electronic immobiliser is built into the ignition key (in the form of a microchip) and operates on a multiple electronic coding basis. The motor vehicle can only be started when the evaluation electronics have identified the coding in the key for starting permission. The key is simply turned, and by the time the ignition switch is reached, the system has identified the electronic coding in the key and 'granted' starting permission.
It is in this way that the EWS safety systems assist in providing BMW drivers with the best possible security.

Hello...
I've posted this problem in about four different BMW forums but to no avail.
The problem is this:
I recently bought a 1996 318ti from a salvage auction. There's nothing wrong with the exterior, it's the interior dashboard that's been vandalised. It looks like an insurance job. It's been made to look like someone tried stealing it. The igniton has been wrecked, some wires have been cut etc...
Anyway, it came with no keys, even if it did the ignition is stuffed up. So I went to a spare parts place and asked the guy for a new ignition + key. He came back with the whole steering lock/ignition switch, the EWS II control unit module and the transmitter/reciever module.
So next day me and my brother replaced the entire steering lock/ignition switch, the EWS II control unit module behind the glovebox and the transmitter/reciever module under the dash situated underneath the steering wheel section.
We tried turning it on and it won't turn on. We tried leaving the key in the ignition on the reds for about an hour thinking the EWS or whatever needed to code the key, but after an hour we tried again, and it wouldn't start. There's power (windows, lights etc...) but the engine won't start.
We've looked over the engine and underneath the dash and everything seems in place so I'm thinking it's got to do with the EWS II security system.
My question is, do I need to buy additional parts (some other modules) that go with the whole security set up? Has it got to do with encoding the key? Please anyone with any clue as to how to start this car please dispense your knowledge.
I want to fix this myself as I don't want to take it to BMW (just yet) cause I don't have a money tree in my backyard.

its coded to the DME, needs to be towed to a stealer to be paired. It will not start unless it is told the DME unit code is a match, its looking for the DME from the car it was taken from.
or someone with carsoft ?

You're saying it needs the DME from the car that the ignition, ews etc.. was taken from?
GoNz0
01-26-2006, 11:50 AM
unless you take it to be coded to accept your DME.
It must be reprogrammed to the new DME, chance is thats cheeper than buying the DME from the guy who sold you the ignition.

But if I get the DME off the guy and replace it with the current (old) one in my car, will it work and start?

if its the same as the one in your car.. must be an exact match on the model number.

Does anyone know where the DME is located on a 96 318ti? I checked underneath the glovebox like unofficialbmw.com said but it's not there. There's a silver square shaped object that is near the EWS II, but I compared the plug on it to pictures of the plugs on DME's on the net and my one seems smaller. Is the plug for the DME the same size as that as the EWS or is it larger?

in the engine bay, on the pass side wall.

Just take it to the dealer. Its a 5 minute procedure to align the EWS system with the DME.
You are asking for trouble swapping DME's IMO, plus spending money on unneeded parts.

would the speedo and OBC need to be aligned as well ?

Nothing. I tried swapping DME's and the same thing happened. the ECU kept looking for the EWS signal regardless of the DME. There is a chip from TMS that deletes the EWS, but thats a lot of money. I'm going to try to delete the EWS like it said earlier in the thread.

I'm not 100% sure but i think you still need the EWS system to be aligned even if you are bypassing it. I tried installing my stock software a few months ago and it would not start. Same circumstances as when my EWS brain failed. So, i'm assuming it needed to be re-aligned with the stock chip.
