Hey guys, noob here...
A friend of mine started an s52 conversion on his 1993 325i and couldn't complete it, so he asked if i could take care of it for him.
I have a few questions for you guys! Firstly, the engine is a '98, with a 1995 M3 engine harness and ecu.
1-The 98 engine has the crank sensor in the back of the block, near the tranny. Can i use the 325 crank sensor which is front mounted, near the crank pulley, and just bolt it in the existing bracket? And ignore the block mounted crank sensor?

2-there is some sort of signal needed by the 95 m3 ecu,(ews???) which won't let the car start. What can be done about this? is there any way to bypass or fool the ecu? (I alwasy thought that BMW started the ews in 1997, guess i was wrong!!)

basically I am stuck there now. No pulse at the injectors or coil, which I guess is due to the ews.

Any help would be greatly appreciated guys!!!!
TIA

Thanks for the reply. I searched already with no luck on my specific questions, but i'll check again with different wording.
Thanks!

The S50 ECU won't work with a S52.

But isn't that the basis of all OBD1 conversions??? Aren't we supposed to use the 95 M3 ecu (s50) and wiring to convert the 96-99 M3 motors (S52) to OBD1?

Can someone answer his question already?:embarrasm
I'm also interested in hearing this. Would a 94 325i have EWS?
I have a 94 325i, with a s52 engine, I can use the original ecu, right?
So the s52 engine is single vanos? If its double, how would it work on a single vanos 325i setup. What do I need to retrofit it?

Of course. That guy had no idea what he was talking about.

S52 is single Vanos.

The M50 / S50 crank position sensor mounts up to the front of the engine. Just ignore the crank position sensor that's mounted to the back of the block.

Get an EWS delete chip for your DME.

Dont even bother with any other dme's or harness's, just use the original, thats what i did..

You're going to need to cut the EWS wiring on the harness. Its the green wire I believe. Use the proper S52 harness. And you cant chip an OBDII DME. You have to flash the software. Just cut the wire and it should start. And if I'm remembering properly, you can use the S50 DME or a 413 with the proper chip for the necessary amount of fuel. If you use an S52 DME, isnt that going implement the emissions controls? Like for fuel vaporing, pressure sensors etc..?

a little OT but couldn't the S50/52 be a direct swap into a 3series chassis?

Yes, it's the same engine... except for the insides, and a few other minor things.
