I just got my new stereo installed today and was having fun out-bassing lame "pimped out" mustang 5.0s, then my mood shifted when on my way home I started to hear a whirring noise from my engine. It sounds like a turbo spooling or something; like a high-pitched whistle that gets more high pitched as the rpms increase. I described the noise to my dad and he thought it might be the power steering. I checked the dipstick and the power steering fluid level is fine, but it kind of smells like what bad differential fluid smells like. Anyone have any suggestions?

Alternator whine. Check your grounds.

I'm going in to the stereo place tomorrow again anyway cuz they screwed up my locks so I'll have them check the grounds too i guess

i had the same problem. what head unit are you running? if your running a high power head unit to the stock amp, this will overdrive the amp and cause the noise. i went from a pioneer 7500 to a Alpine 9813 then the noise started, i switched back to a pioneer 740 and the noise quit. i put the alpine in my nephews kia just using the deck for power and no noise. ive been told by several installers that this is a common problem. some high power decks do and some dont interfere. but if your bypassing he factory amp it could be the ground or a defective head unit. ive seen it happen both ways

To fix: take every/any audio cable away from the running board on the passenger side of the car... The battery cable from the trunk is run through there and thats what causes the noise... I had to rerun my RCAs for my stereo on the drivers side of the car cause of that... -Dave
