Can I put on a 235/40 tire on an 8.5 wheel? Is it safe and will performance be compromised?
Thanks.
You can, the 95 ltws were 7.5 front and 8.5 rear and they ran 235/40/17s all around. It's just streched a bit thin is all.

You can. I’m actually doing it right now. I won’t do it again thought because I don’t like the look of tire being stretched but that’s just me.

Actually in 95, the LTWs there where stamped and silver where same size all around. The LTW polished wheels which were an option on the 96+ cars where staggered.
But running 235/40/17s on 17x8.5s are fine, and same with 245/40/17s on 17x8.5s.

Sorry man, but you're incorrect. The stamped unpolished wheels found on the 95 M3 are staggered and used the same sized tires all around, thats why many people think that they're the same size.
Here are p/ns from teh etk

03 LIGHT ALLOY RIM 81/2JX17 ET:41 2 36112227360
The later polished unstamped style, like the kind I have on my 325 were the same size, no longer forged, and had the 96.5+ setup of 225/45/17s in the front and 245/40/17s in the rear.
Thank you :D

so the 95s (stamped) were forged?
the 96-99 are cast?
thanks.

235/40/ is just fine on a 8.5 rim. mine dont look stretched, but rather bulky. but michelin ps2s runs fatter than most tires

Actually I beleive everything stated above except the polished ones are also forged.
I had a set that I sold and they were stamped forged on them somewhere IIRC.

Thanks for the info guys. so what I'm understanding is that the tire will fit 8.5s and the 95s were/are forged.:buttrock

Prior to the staggered 7.5/8.5 configuration, there were 7.5 wheels all around and they were fitted with 235/40 tires. When the staggered configuration came out, they were fitted with 225/45 and 245/40 tires.
The only difference between the LTW wheels and the polished wheels is the finish. They are both forged.
235/40 tires are typically recommended to be fitted on rims of 8-9.5 width. so you should be okay with 8.5. If you want to verify this, check the tire manufacturer's recommendations.
I have them on the front 7.5 rims with 245 on the rear 8.5 rims. They seem to fit fine and they don't look too big. The sidewalls are basically vertical.

What about 225/45s on 8.5" rim?
Too narrow?
I'm looking for snows, but don't want to buy new rims.
TIA

They will be a little stretched out but will work.

I believe the range for 17x8.5 wheels are 225 - 255.

The typical rim size for a 225/45 is 7-8.5, but if you want to be sure, check the specification of whatever tire you're interested in.
WRT getting another set of rims, if you add up the costs of mounting and balancing twice a year, every year over a few years, you'll pay for a set of rims. Not to mention the convenience.

:rofl
the wheels I bought are 7.5 w 245/40s & 8.5 w 235/40s (dunlop sport 9000).
I'm thinking somebody tried to correct the staggered affect or something. Who knows.
thanks for all the responses guys.

That's a crazy set-up. What are you going to do with them?

Why not stick the 245's on the 8.5 and buy some new 235 for the 7.5 rims...
I hope I can fit 265 all around on 9 inch wheels with the flares I just bought.

one of each is messed up/balled. i like the look and the diameter of the 235s.

Yeah I like the way mine looks I have 8.5inch front and rear with the 235/40 18's. On the 17inch I like the way the 245 looked, meaty looking.

I run that setup in the summer. It works surprisingly well. It doesn't even look stretched out.
