I am in the market for new tires, and just went and priced them. I was going to look into getting Michelin, but no where here in town can get me a good enough deal on them. So I started pricing other brands, and I had to drop down to a V rated tire. Just let me know what ya'll like, or if your recommendation is not listed tell me what it is.
I need something with a strong sidewall that will not roll under on a hard corner. I drive pretty spirted when I get the chance, and go up to Deals Gap, and other mountain twisties when I get the chance. This is for the E36 323is, I know there are others out there that people like better
Toyo Proxes 4
Goodyear Eagle F1 GS
Pirelli P6000
Yokohama TRV
Thanks

I run summer tires all year around so I don't know anything about all season tires but I have read they don't do anything well.

I run Toyo's T1S / T1R in the summer and Bridgestone Blizzaks in the winter for the most part. I have heard that the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S is a good compromise tire if you really have your heart set on an all season tire.

I have all season z-rated Nitto NT450's and they work just great in all conditions. $122.25 each including replacement certificates with free shipping from Discount Tire Direct: $489 shipped for a set of 4. They're a great all season performance tire. I've taken 35 mph corners at 80+ with no squeal or sliding and minimal role. Wet traction is pretty decent too: just don't power out of corners to heavily. But who would be driving like that in the rain/snow anyway. However, if you're not concerned with wet traction/year round performance I would look at a summer tire. I had Michilen Pilot Sports on my car before these and they are great for dry conditions. I imagine the PS2's are that much better.

My opinion goes as follows:
1) 15" Wheels and 205/60/15:
- $65/tire @ TR - 60k mile warranty - BFGoodrich Traction T/A H-Rated
- $89/tire @ TR - 45k mile warranty - Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S H-Rated
2) 16" Wheels and 225/50/16:
- $80/tire @ TR - 60k mile warranty - Yokohama Avid V4S V-Rated
- $91/tire @ TR - 0 mile warranty - Avon Tech M550 A/S W-Rated
- $114/tire @ TR - 60k mile warranty - BFGoodrich Traction T/A V-Rated
3) 17" Wheels
- Could be 225/45/17s all around, 235/40/17s all around, or a fender roll and 245/40/17s all around depending upon how aggressive you want to get.
I would be curious to know what size you have and go from there.
I can tell you if its close to a stocker, that I've driven a car that had 205/60/15s and some Michelin Energy MXV4s in V-Rating. Installed new BFGoodrich Traction T/As in H-Rating and the car handled and felt much better. Just an example, usually if you let us know the size wheel or tire, we'll give you our input.

Right now it is 225-50-16 with Z rated Tires

Well then:
Tire #1) If you want an OEM like ride, with better handling and wear this is the tire. Also has a decent wear rating and mileage warranty. Decent price, but don't think you will be happy with this.
Tire #2) If you want a tire that is all-season, cheap and handles well, but might not last as long (say 30k miles instead of 60) then this might be the tire for you.
Tire #3) Great tire, and very decent traction for an all-season. Still not a dedicated summer tire, or an extremely aggressive all-season tire, but deff the next best thing.
If you don't mind me asking, what tire do you have now and do you like its characteristics?

Right now I have Sumitomo (sp?)
I know they are a cheap crap tire. These are what came on the car when I got it. They have done pretty good in the rain, etc. Also, they have done well up at DEALS GAP in North CArolina, it is 318 curves in 12 miles. Once they are warm they hold the road well, I have not rolled a sidewall. I also have Dinan Sway Bars, and Strut Tower Brace to rid it of body roll. Which is the main type of weather we see here in the south. A real snow storm every 4 years or so, and that would only be enough to cover the road. I just want good wet traction, along with the handling in the twisties.
Saying all of that, do you think I should just go with a summer tire. Or get some sort of all-season. I will not have a a winter set at all.
Thanks for all your help. Right now price wise here in town, I was thinking of the Toyo Proxes, or maybe Pirelli, or BFG are also on the list. I will be back at my desk in 15 minutes, and will have the prices and tires that I have been quoted

Well if you care about grip, wet, and dry... and only possible all-season traction... then I say go with a special 3 season tire.
Otherwise, Pirelli PZero Nero M+S in 225/50/16 at $101/tire.
As for a non All-Season tire, Eagle F1 GS D3 all the way but at $155/tire.

Ok, here is what I have been quoted at here in town, I have not checked tirerack just yet
Toyo - Proxe 4 $475 -$560
Toyo- Proxe T1R W Rated $562
BFG - Traction $690
Pirelli P6000 $670
Yokohama TRV $500
All of these are mounted, balanced, life time rotation, and everywhere has to order them. The ratings range from V-Z.
I would do summer tires, but I do not see that as a good idea since there is always the chance for ice or whatever, and I can not afford to have both the summer and winter sets. THat seem right to you.
just checked mine are Sumitomo HTR+ Z rated

So your tires are actually All-Season already.
Toyo Proxes felt like Pirelli P6000 - Both junk and better Grand Touring then High Performance. Yokohama AVid TRZ - V Rating is another tire that feels like junk to me.
Toyo Proxes T1R are very nice tires for their price, but aren't all-season.
I say the BFGoodrich Traction T/A V-Rated tires might be your best bet....

Dunlop Sport A2s were my favorite tire when they came out for its class, but in that price range some pretty decent tires have come out since...

Here is the new Michelin High Performance All Season.

I've driven on them and they are actually pretty good in most conditions.
$122 at TireRack in a 225/50/16.

I called a tire shop that my mechanic recommends, and he thought for the price for the Toyo Proxes was a good deal. He also said he had put that on several cars, and had no complaints. So I ended up going with those, and so far I am happy with my choice.

I went with Toyos for the price/performance. Good choice so far!

Pirelli PZero Nero's M&S - reasonable price, good traction in all conditions (not GREAT - but pretty darn good) and comfortable ride. Price isn't bad either. They are rated as a performance tire - with a compound to make them driveable in bad weather. The other option is Michelin PS2 M&S. Worked well for me last winter.
