View Full Version : Guibo Help Now!!!!
I just lifted up my car because my car was having a horrible vibrating and found that the guibo (flex disk) is torn up wih the threads coming out. Now, its thanksgiving and I know most places arent open, so does anyone know if I can use an automatic m3 guibo with a manual tranny? TIA!!
go to www.realoem.com and type in the year of m3 you have and search the guibo and get the part # for the auto and get the # for the 5 speed and compair.
Good luck!
depending on how bad it is you should be able to drive with it torn I did on my 325 for a week before fixing it

You're right JM3, I need new fender walls. So I gotta wait until I get them first.
As for the the guibo, its really FCUKED. String like threads are coming out of it. It is totally dead. There is no way I can drive with it like that. I'm gonna get a new one. My car is on jackstands right now and I am having a bit of trouble getting the guibo off. Does anyone know if you can take the guibo off without having to take off the driveshaft AND the exhaust? TIA.

My 325i had a guibo so screwed up that it was non-existant!!! Just the bolts of the two sides were holding the driveshaft together! All those pics of worst guibo ever were destroyed by mine!

Auto and std shift do not take the same part #.
The center bearing is the same though.
Manual part is 26 11 2 226 527

You might be able to get your hand and a tool into the space where the opposing bolts for the guibo are without removing some of the misc parts you listed, but good luck if you don't remove the exhaust and shields, etc, see this link for pix and info from pelican for the Guibo replacement on the E36 (http://www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/techarticles/E36-Guibo/E36-Guibo.htm). Don't forget to get NEW guibo bolts aqnd nuts, the exhaust gasket rings and new fasteners, and a few good beers for the period of time you'll have to walk away from the car if you're trying to do this for the first time by yourself...

I've changed guibos at the track without removing the exhaust or driveshaft. Just take the 6 bolts out, take a pry bar or big screwdriver and push the driveshaft toward the rear of the car. There is enough play in the center bearing to allow the old flex disc to drop out and then just slide the new one back and and bolt it down.
I just got it off without taking anything out. Took me 5 mins. Now time to find a new guibo...:(

Might be a good idea to replace the center support bearing too.
take a pry bar or big screwdriver and push the driveshaft toward the rear of the car.
So let me see if I have this right.
Unbolt all the fasteners and apply leverage to the shaft along it's axis.
Where does the lever go to do that?

Straight up from the bottom. It only has to move 1/4 of an inch.

Considering the amount of leverage needed, how large a lever did you need?
You were on your back, right?
And did replacing with new piece require two sets of hands?
I was on my back to do it. I used a pretty hefty breaker bar. My breaker bar is about 18 inches long. It's pretty easy and self explanatory once you're down there.
BTW, I just picked up the guibo from a bmw parts dealer today, it was about 75 dollars. Not too bad. I'm gonna go put it back on right now. I'll let you guys know how it goes.
any word? i hope this doesn't mean your car will get faster :( I think we were neck and neck!
I dunno JM3, but when I just drove it after changing the guibo, the shifts different; it feels more like yours. I dunno how to explain it over the forums.

The Bentley even uses that term in the index.
Origin, who knows?
I just want to know how do you mange to put the new one in when you have to lever the shaft at the same time if doing it yourself?
What do you use as a fulcrum?
Sorry if this seems like a stupid question, but even though I've been under the car a hundred times in the past, I don't remember seeing anywhere to plant a lever at the coupling point.
Probably, because I never thought of changing the disc this way.

Update on the vibration after the install? thx :)
Okay, as for the removal and reinstall, you have to understand that the driveshaft is in two pieces and they are not 100 percent linked together yet. So when you remove all the bolts and nuts from the guibo, you can actually yank the driveshaft back a bit and the two pieces of the driveshafts will slide closer together but only about 2-3 inches which is still not enough to remove the guibo. To fully disconnect the driveshaft from the tranny, you move the guibo to the tranny side, and use the TOP EDGE OF THE GUIBO AS THE FULCRUM. You must apply some good amount force to disconnect the driveshaft. To put the guibo back on, I pushed the drivshaft up, tilted the guibo and placed the female end of the driveshaft into the center hole of the guibo, and then played around with it got back onto the driveshaft. After that you can use the breaker bar and fulcrum method that I used to reconnect the driveshaft to the transmission. If you need any more help let me know.
Hm... the vibration that I refered to before is 100 percent gone, but my car is still rough and stiff as hell. My car still has tons of vibrations caused by crappy roads. :stickoutt
You guys should all honestly check out your guibos. If there are any signs of wear and tear I would change it ASAP. A messed up guibo creates unbalanced rotation and can throw a lot of things off on our cars.
Heres a quick little image I drew on paint so you can get an idea of how to remove it. Sorry I couldn't take any real pictures of the removal, I was somewhat in a rush.

Good to know. I remembered doing this without taking anything out. Also, i heard you want to use the E46 M3 Convertible guibo. It is supposedly stronger.
Also did it look anything like mine?
