The insulation on the inside of my hood is pretty torn up, and I was wondering if I can just take it off and clean the adhesive off of the paint...or do I really need something there? What's the purpose of it, anyways? Heat? Noise? What can I replace it with that's better, if thats necessary?
Thanks guys!

I don't see a problem with removing it as the 95 M3 LTW did not have it. I think its for noise more then anything.
There isnt adhesive , its held in with plastic removable rivit clips.

Bill, you sure? I'll go check mine now but I could swear the e30 one is glued in place...
I am almost positive that it is held in with clips , unless the person before you glued it on . Is your cover a single piece or multi?

If its like this then its foam insulation. Looks like a PITA to remove.
Got to detail the engine bay soon.:embarrasm

I just took it off. It was indeed foam, glued to the hood. I managed to take most of it off in big chunks, and i kinda ripped the rest off with my nails. Used the Shop-Vac to clean up what fell into the engine bay...not that it matters since I'll be detailing the engine soon.
I think lighter fluid will remove the glue from the inside of the hood very nicely. I'll let ya guys know when I try...

Just to clear things up, depending on the E30's model year it could be a huge one piece panel that spans the whole underside of the hood and clips on with about a dozen fasteners (like on the 88 325i/is), or it could be 3 separate pieces of foam glued to the hood panel between the braces (like on the 89 325i/is).
I took mine off a long time ago - the hood feels as hot to the touch as it always has so i think the stuff is just for sound deadening.

Yep, it was indeed the 3 piece deal...and it left me some nice gunk to get off tomorrow. Thanks hood foam stuff!

I have the one piece. How do I remove the clips holding it in place? I want a little more engine noise and I think this might be the ticket. BTW, Randy... your car is everything I aspire to make my car. (Although I may go a little bit more overboard on the powerplant) It's beautiful and classic and it's just plain sick. I've seen it before and I must say that it is a work of art. Good job. Ben, buy coil-overs before seats, because I must say that the coil-overs make the seats seem more reasonable, yes?

I dunno, my seats SUCK and I want more supportive seats BADLY.
And yes, my car will look like Randy's car someday...cept without the larger front "is" lip...

Your seats must be more worn than mine, then, Ben. (ha... that rhymes...) Mine are nice and comfy and feel brand new. That's why seats are low on my list. I'll sell you mine for the price of a pair of Sparco Pro2000s....

Don't you wish...:D
I've already got someone who is going to sell me two of these for about the same as it would cost to get one of my seats fixed up and upholstered in leather...do the math  ...
