Canatro I am from the UK. And it is not legal but if its worth doing and makes a difference I will remove it any how. My main reason for asking is that my old car which was a Rover. It had a sensor on the cat, so when I removed it the car didn't run to well and I had to refit it again.
Thanks for the input. :smoke2:

Please do not remove the car or gut it out. I have no respect for someone who does this just to get 1hp or so. Just find a cat online somewhere even if its a used one with low miles. You can't go wrong.

I understand why there are cats on cars but if the man wants to take it out so be it. As far as him worrying if you are going to respect him or not..... .

actually, removing the cats make quite a difference. i think on cars before 96 there are only 2 sensors. they can be removed with relatively no probs (or at least none that i've heard of) if the car is after 96, i think there are 4 sensors. 2 in front of the cat and 2 after.

I am not doing it for the extra 1bhp its just, it needs replacing and to replace the cat is going to cost about $400 and a bit of pipe will cost me $10. If it is a known problem removing the cat I will have to save up for a few months.
Any how thanks for you input.

You can decat your e36, but it will be an instant MOT failure.
Unless you get a decent decat pipe, you will probably lose some low end performance anyway.
You will also need to drill holes for the o2 (lambda) sensor, without that the car will run very rich - you will lose about 5-10mpg.
A decent decat is probably going to be 1-200 quid predrilled, to get a pipe welded up with the right flanges (or two pipes, dependant on if you have a 325) is going to be 50 odd quid, you could probably get a second hand set of cats from a breaker like FAB, BMBitz etc for not much more...

If it is any help...I have a 1998 740I that only has 2 O2 sensors and the car was de-catted by the previous owner. Looks like he got 2 pipes welded in place of the cats. This effect has caused an annoying booming and chugging noise when cold that I have been told will only go away if I replace the 2 pipes with a silencer...
