View Full Version : New 7 series styling

Back in 03' my uncle purchased a new 745i. Everyone in my family, myself included thought it was an incredible car. Now two years later, and having owned a 02' 325ci I found myself needing a bigger car. Just out of curiosity I checked the price of pre-owned 745i's and found the 02's to be an excellent value right now. Selling for as much as 12,000 below Blue Book. As an added bonus, most are still covered under the BMW 8 yr/100,000 mile warranty. That was all I needed to make my desicion. We found a really nice, fully loaded 02' 745i with 38k miles. A few days later I was surfing the net and happened upon this forum. I was curious to read what some of the "diehards" were saying about the car. I WAS SHOCKED TO READ HOW MUCH PEOPLE IN HERE HATE THE STYLING. I have owned just about every sports car made including a couple of Ferraris and being a full blooded Italian, I think I have a decent handle on what is ugly in the sheet metal department. To me, the new 7 series styling is a HUGE LEAP forward from the old 7's. IMO the old 7's styling looks tired and boxy standing next to the new one. BMW is coming out with some changes to the 7's styling in 06'. I read more than one post about it here and you people are raving about it. With coments like "wow what a big improvement" and "I think they got the message". I put the pictures side-by-side from a number of different angles and I'M SORRY BUT THE CAR LOOKS THE FRIGGIN' SAME!!! There are some very subtle differences to the hood-line, the tail light and the rake of the windshield but for the most part, the car looks the same!! Sorry to sound off like this on my first post, but I just dont get it. Also, as long as I am complaining, I must say those stupid little emoticons, or whatever you call them, are really annoying. They jiggle and dance around like little morons making it difficult to type. There I said it....sorry...

The new 7 is fine, the front of the 02's was ugly, in comparison to the 06's, but it was never really as bad as people made it out to be.

Althoygh, the 2001 E38's do look classier than the pre facelift E65's.

And I don't see what being italian has to do with good taste.

I agree that the 02's styling was never as bad as some made it out to be. I still think that the 06' looks the essentially the same. Def. not enough to say that it is fixing some styling "problem". BMW owners are a devoted lot. I think the car was so different when it came out that it scared a lot people into hating it. All they had to compare it to was the old 7 which was a solid car consistent with BMW tradition. As far as being Italian, I did not say that I had good taste. I think maybe my ancestors knew a thing or two about design though....lol

CORNUDO please remove yourself from this forum, you contribute nothing.

just beacuse youre italian doesnt mean anything about you know jack about style, nor does it make your ancestors

my ancestors are german, does that mean i know a thing or two about the mass killing of select races? no

dont make a random rant as post 1 on a forum that doesnt want to hear it

hmm...no...sorry. I dont see that much difference. Oh wait...yeah the headlight..WOW the headlight shape is different. Oh..yeah the hood is a little more rounded and WAIT!! ...the shape of the front grills have changed a little. WOOOOW....Oh I love it now!! Bangle should have done this in the first place. What was he thinking??? BMW will sell lots more of these now!!! Uh...You people are killing me.!!....lol....this is great.

Oh please,

The headlights on the 02 are deofrmed doopy looking thingys that make the car look vaguely retarded. The lower vlance looks like it is frowning, and the abundance of black plastic looks cheap.

New seven headlights follow the E38 theme, rounded off rectangular shape, vaguely upturned lower grills and valance, and in general a more uplifted front end.

CORNUDO

I dont think the front headlights look droopy or deformed. The lower valence on the new 750 looks good to me but so does the 745. I just did a side by side comparison from pics on another website. Yes,the profile of 750 looks more rounded now but not that much different. It has a more bulbous look to it. If anything, it looks more like an AUdi A8 than a BMW. Which to me is a step in the wrong direction. My only point here is they are not fixing much in this "new design". I just comes down to a matter of opinion.

Get lost... go drive your ugly 7'45'... nobody wants your "opinion" here...the 750 owns you, why? because BMW took what us "DIEHARD" bmw enthusiasts and even a sh*tload of magazine editors thought was ugly and improved greatly on it... if u cant see that, ur truly the noob of all noobs and i bid you farewell

the 02 745i/Li were crap. they would always come into the dealership that I was working at. and the techs hated working on them, and they didnt look all too hot, when they first came out people wanted more of the E38's rather than the E65. now that the newer 7's are made better and designed better people want them more. i definately agree with JB///M3.

For a person who prides himself as a decendant of a long line of designers, you sure don't care much for detail. Maybe the changes BMW made were small, but they were the changes that they needed to make to perfect the design of the car. The new design is so much better looking to me because of those small changes. I still like the older one, but I can see the difference a mile away. I would think a "design specialist" would see them even more so.

I understand, when my father worked at the dealership, I was up there one day and some kids decided to steal an e65. Dumb. They couldnt figure out how to start the car. They were caught. Maybe the techs left the doors unlocked when they parked in hopes people would steal it so they wouldn't have to work on it :evil2

Well as far the repair issues go. They are mainly aimed at the computers. BMW has issued a number of software updates and that solves most of the problems. All of the negative comments about the car seem to coming from people who either do not own one or who have never driven one. We have had our 02' 745i now for a week and I think that the car is amazing in many respects. As far as styling, you are not going to convince me that the new 06' is a drastic improvement. Finally, there are more than a couple of you who do not have the ability to engage in dialogue without calling someone who disagrees with you an asshole. I looked at the cars that you so proudly post along with your messages. Uh....first of all they may be BMW's but they are old pieces of shit. After seeing those pictures I can see that I am dealing with some arrogant kids who would piss themselves if I took them for a ride out on the track in my Viper ACR. This is my last post.
I started this thread to ask a few simple questions as to why people in this and other BMW boards hate the styling of the new 745i so much and think the new one solves thier dilema. What I receivd is a bunch of hot air from a bunch of kids.

The people that have posted own E36's which are not exactly old, the only car that could be seen as old is Shragons E34 5'er, and that car looks miles better than either the 06 or 02 sevens.

If you can't stop flaming and whining, just go away now.

cornudo, who cares if most of the people on here drive older cars, maybe they like to drive them because they have them for different purposes (auto-x, canyon, track, daily driver, show, go) and they obviously picked that car based upon their budget and the options that it came with. the newer the car is, the more of a pita it is to fix because of the electronics behind all of them now and all of the extra technologies surrounding the car. e12, e24, e28, e30, e34 and some others were made with simple electronics and simple technology. as years passed they made them more advanced which made them more prone to having electrical problems or maintenance problems in the latter future. and just coz you drive an 02 745i/Li doesnt make you better than everyone else. i would rather someone who drives an E39 M5 or an M3 for example, more than some punk ass like yourself who drives a 7 series that their parents bought for them. and fyi, most of the people who post on here either have familes or are over the age of 18, so I take your comment about being called a punk ass kid an insult and im sure that others on this board do so as well. so before you try and argue or prove a point on bfc be sure you know what your talking about, or else you wont get any respect around here, and then there wont be any point in posting on these boards or continue being a member. and another things, just because your full blooded italian does not give you an excuse to say that you are the king of car styling, which is not the truth at all.

Didn't have the patience to read through all the bickering. But I think there is a big difference between the E65 and E66. If you analyse them separately, sure, they might seem like 'little' differences.

Put them all together, and bam, they make a huge difference. The E65 looks like a bulldog. It looks way angry. The E66 looks classier, and looks softer, it's more neutral looking, just appeals to way more people that way.

Don't hate us for not liking your car. Everyone's got their own opinion. Leave it at that.

No one here disrespected his opinion. He's just upset because he doesn't have the newer 7, and he's desperatley trying to make his car on par with it. He wanted all of us to say "Oh yeah, the new 7 is identical to the older 7." When we didn't, he disrespected our opinion.

7's are for retired people. haha just messing, its all BMW, its all family, its all good. Personally though.. Im goin to stick in 3 series fun until i get into my mid 30's then maybe I'll opt for an M5, then maybe when Im like 50 Ill think about a 7. :devillook It depends on if they keep going with their funny looks.. Im thinking the only good looking new BMW I've seen are M3's and the few pics Ive seen for the M6. The whole new 5's and 7's are just looking lame IMO. The again, to me ALL car companies are turning they're new cars looks to crap. Tryin to be too futuristic. Oh well, enough ranting my opinion. Im off to go wash my "old pos" car.

In my short tenure here I have learned a lot neat things like model codes and a few nice buzzwords. I had no idea that the car I bought was not a 02 745i as I thought but rather a Bangled E65. Or bungled E65 depending on what camp your in. I agree with E36 guy, "its all BMW it's all family". I have been fortunate enough in my life to have owned or driven a bunch of nice cars. Up until 2 years ago I have never owned a BMW though. The last two years we spent with our 325ci were great. I had to give that car the distinction of being the most reliable car to own longterm and tons of fun to drive. I respect what you guys do with your cars and didn't mean to call them P'sO.S. Which they certainly are not. I was just frustrated at having my posts ripped out of context. I really am enjoying this forum and I think there a plenty of good people here.

thats good to hear. this forum is great and anyone can learn a WHOLE lot from lurking around here and askin questions and such. The thing you have to keep in mind though is you have people from all over the world on here. They all have their opinions too.. So when you voice your opinion, there WILL be people that think differently and since it is a discussion forum, they will voice theirs back at you. You cant take it all to heart. Its peoples opinion. If you love your car, then good. You bought it, you should love it. I see many people get ripped on here for the things they do to their cars. (some people deserve it.. lol. but mostly they dont) All I am saying is, use this forum for what its for but dont get hurt and pissed at all of the people that voice their opinions (most of the time in harsh ways). with that said, welcome to the fun. You can try all you want, but this site begins to run through your veins... Im on here constantly it seems. :buttrock
PS, maybe if you feel brave enough, post some pics of your vehicle(s) and get some opinions on how it looks.

Whats up with your car deignation, there was no such thing as a 745 E38, which is what a quarter to 8 would translate to, either it's a 10 til 8 or a 20 til 8.

I heard it in a song and liked it

The E38 was introduced in August 1994 replacing the E32 seven series. The E65 is the current model.

The 750iL is the top of the line. It has a 5.4 liter engine and delivers 10% more power and torque than the older 5.0. Most E38s have a V-8 engine. Early models were 3.0 (Europe only) and 4.0 liter. In 1996 these became 3.5 (again Europe only) and 4.4. Although the 4.4 delivers the same power as the 4.0, the 4.4 has slightly more torque and greater flexibility throughout the rev range. The newer V8s feature more advanced electronics as well. US owners can buy the 740i with a sport pack. In Europe the cars tend to have a choice of two suspension settings as factory options.

you can get different models europe side ;) but the end of the day it sounds cool  i cant be assed to change it ;)
