Most the people in the tech line / BMW NA engineering have come from BMW STEP... Its one of the best steping stones if you want to get high up with BMW NA...

But my plan is to become a non-working shopforman or service manger at a dealer.

damn dude, those are some badass pics, congratulations on being where u are, i am definetly envious, i work for my parents construction company and am considering a move to bmw tech. LOHE, How bad do they discriminate for driving record, i just got a 85 in a 60, its the only ticket i have had in about 5 years, but its a damn bad one, would they not let me in because of this? have fun with school it looks like a lot of fun.

Good luck it is very hard to get in. First you have to go to some sore of basic automotive school. IE I went to UTI, there are others like wyotech(sp). Only 2 kids ( out of 16) in our class came from the wyotech the rest are UTI Grads. 2nd out of the 3500ish grads only 16 get in. (240 a year get in nation wide not sure how many UTI grads in a year but its ALOT). So they only take the best people for this program. They look at your grades ( I had a 4.0 in UTI and my honors), they look at your attendance rate ( I had a 99.89 I missed 4 hours one day when I went to the ER), They look at your work history in the autofield 6 months MINIMUM. ( I had worked at a BMW dealer for 2 years 1 and 1/2 of which I was in the shoping working on these cars). I also have taken all the ASE test and have MASTER ASE. They look at your driving recored no more than 2 tickets.. DUI you are scrwed dont even bother with it. O and tickets they pull you current driving recoreds 3 years back. Hmm O ya and random drug test... I think that is all.

O and I hope you like homework and reading.... :) O and LOVE BMW's

I had 9 SOC's and when I did my interview they didnt even care to much... :rolleyes glad I worked so hard for them....

I didnt take it but 1/2 our class took ford fact they say it helps for your interview but I dont know if it will, really it might be something they say just to get you to take it so they get more money.

It is a big factor ( see my above post #6) They are very strict on who they let in.

Damn your living my dream man..

My HS grades kinda are the SUXOR.... but they didnt even look at them they look at your "basic automotive training school" Like Universal Technical Institute(UTI) That is also where most the BMW STEP facilites are with UTI. Also see above post for my UTI info.. 4.0 GPA, 99.89 attendance rate, 99.06 average LAB grade, Directors Honor roll list 12 times, 9 SOC's ( top in your class out of around 30 students for that subject like brakes, auto trans ect), nominated for ALPHA BETA KAPPA National Honor Society, I have taken and pased all 8 ASE test's and caryy MASTER ASE TECHNATION. And have a ton of other credits for auto stuff... Like 609 ( a/c certified) moog, All Data, ect ect.

So my UTI grades are the ROXOR.... and that is what they look at.

Ummm I would really like to know how you pulled this off? With no Previous "Basic auto school" they pretty much wont let you into step.... I know this for a fact I worked at a dealership in the shop on the cars doing warranty work and everything. The dealership I worked for wanted to send me to STEP and we started talking to the BMW field service reps and others. They said we cant get you in unless you get some sort of "basic auto training". And no my 4 years at HS in autoshop didnt count. Which sucked for me I had worked on cars for 1 and 1/2 years so it made UTI pretty boring for me.... Still learned alot from it but it doesnt go into alot of depth....

Aah...brings back some memories. I just recently graduated STEP from the Columbia, MD training center and am starting work on Dec. 5th at South Bay BMW in the Los Angeles/Torrance, CA area.
Good luck that last week before graduation when all of the work is due. That was one of the most stressful weeks of my life and i've even been through college, etc (i'm actually 32!). Seemed like more work than was humanly possible to get done in the time alotted, but just hunker down and you'll get it done. Good luck with the rest of the program...

For those of you interested in getting into STEP, aside from the required 98% attendance and 3.6 minimum GPA requirement for your time in post secondary tech school (UTI, LTI, Wyotech, etc.) IMHO the most important part of the application process is the interview. The interview is really what gives them the idea of wether you would be sucessful as a BMW tech. If you have the drive and commitment they are looking for then you have a good chance.

I take Automotive class during school. After school lets out at 3:20, I go straight to BMW in the afternoon until 9 where the shop turns into a classroom for me. I am with a Master Mechanic working on everything he does, and learning as I go. It's called the AYES programs through our school that lets student's work at the dealership to get trained. I won't be getting sent to STEP I, it will be STEP II which is the same as I except it's not crammed all together in a couples of months, I take classes during every week.

Mpowered02
11-09-2005, 12:00 PM
STEP II is definitely not the same as STEP I. I specifically asked the Technical Team leader at my STEP school what the difference was between STEP I and II and he said that STEP II is simply just a shorter version...meaning you only get the basic classes and not the more advanced stuff. I don't think they even get Body Electronics III in STEP II and that class is necessary for all the current cars in my opinion. The electronics on the cars is so complex now...I wouldn't even think to work on an E65 electrical problem without having had Body Elec III...

98technom3

the gpa minimum now is 3.0 but a 3.5 is preferred....97.5% attendence REQUIRED 100 preferred....1 yr (was just changed FROM 6 mths) commitment with BMW after step is over....no more than 2 tickets within 3 yrs from application point

yah the STEP program is a great way to get in to a bimmer dealership, when i worked for a local BMW dealer there were 4 or 5 step kids as they called them there and now the some of the techs there are making $100k+ a year.... pretty god damn good money for a mechanic!

heres a pic of my office :D

It's technician and a bunch of BMW STEP kids at the dealer I was out/going back to are in the 100K+ a year range one of the reasons I am glad I did this.

A mechanic cant tell me how byteflight works..... or on a E65/66 (new 7's)that when you press the volume up button on the MFL ( multi function steering wheel) The signal then goes to the SZL then on the byteflight fiber optic to the SIM then on byteflight wire to the ZGM then over the PT-CAN bus to the control display then sends it over the MOST bus to the RAD (radio) to the AMP to tell it to turn it up.... :buttrock :eyecrazy O and this happnes in millia seconds.

But then on the 04+ it is a little diffrent becuase they got rid of the ZGM well kind of they just put the SIM and ZGM in one box... and call it a SGM.... their is a reason these guys make alot of money you really have to know how the car works.

STEP II is NOTHING like STEP I and now they have fast track it has even less class...:help I have a paper that shows what each class gets I will have to dig it up and try and post a pic of it... But STEP II is almost 1/2 of I and if I was in your shoes I would try to some how get into I if it isnt to late.

Very true BODY III is one of the best classes we are coming up to it soon. But I have goen ahead and read most of the book allready... that MFL-AMP thing is something you would learn in body III electronics

It's technician

hahaha i knew you were going to say that :D thats why i put that, just screwin with you.

and as for the race team thing... you definitely will not get rich working as a mechanic for a race team, the pay can be good but not $100k thats for sure and its very very hard work, unless you are a engineer or driver then the pay is much better. Working for weeks or months straight with 16+ hour days not unusual. I work for The Racers Group/ TRG and we have a 2 car daytona prototype team and a 2 car GT GTO.R team in Grand Am and im glad im not a mechanic for one the teams because they bust their asses.

For master ASE you need to have passed A1-A8 and have 2 years of in the field working on cars in those areas. ( I think you can sub. 1 year of school for 1 year of work) O and there is a L1 test ( advance test) but you dont have to take it for master. I have not taken the L1 yet but I heard it isnt to hard. Good for you guys. I was thinking of doing the same thing when i was a little younger but have deffinately decided i don't want to work on cars for a living. My dad owned his own foreign mechanic shop for 20 years(bmw ferrari porsche benz, etc.) Working for a dealership is much better, especially bmw. They really take care of good employees. And working for a race team is VERY DIFFICULT. My dad now works for the Alex Job factory Porsche team.

Yes the dealers send you back to classes they have to meet CORA standards for BMW of NA or they start losing out on alot of stuff. To hold BMW MASTER you have to have every current class. ( they give like a 1 year grace for when a class just comes out like E60 M5, 05 update ect.) But if it comes out and you dont have it within that year you lose BMW master untill you get all them done.

Nice thread.
I graduated from UTI Houston Oct 8th 04, and I was accepted to STEP about 7-8 months later. I had to wait for my driving record to clean up for the 3 year period. Didn't see much mention of driving record requirements in this thread. I interviewed with the same guy 3 times, until I was finally accepted. Lol, he liked the persistence though.

I'll be starting in the Upper Saddle River NJ class on Nov 21st 05. Can't wait.:alright

i was going to get an early sixties BMW bike like i used to have when i was a kid (solo seat, earles forks) but instead i picked up an 05 Triumph bonneville T-100, no not the tangerine, for some odd reason the local dealer had a black/white one sitting on the showroom floor and they actually knocked about a grand off the price. I don't pile the miles on big bikes like i used to so this is perfect for me. i really want to trade the wife's 645cic in on a M6 convertible when they become available (do the euro delivery bit) but i'm concerned that the chime/gong deal will be too loud on that too and i wont go thru that again.

I think he was refering to STEP training, Yes it is mostly on newer vehicles but they do go over some E36 stuff but not much we only have that one E36 in their. By the time you start they might not even cover E36 at all.

yeah we know
what they need to do is train them now to turn down the volume on warning chimes in newer cars and come up with a better method
one simple solution is to make cars so they wont start up without the seat belt fastened NOW HOW HARD WOULD THAT BE????

That's awesome. I'm attending UTI's Mooresville campus right now and I can't wait to graduate in late March. I recently got accepted for the Audi academy and I'll be headed to their PA school in july '06. I just hope the money is as good as they say it is, as I'm going to need a metric s***ton to fund my gearhead hobbies and dreams of a nice house and garage.

I seriously considered BMW but everyone, their best friend and their grandma all want Mercedes, Porsche and BMW. I decided to go for one of the underdogs Audi. Maybe after a few year's time I can slowly work my way through VW's corridors into Bentley, Lamborghini or even Bugatti (probably not but it's an entertaining thought!).
