Is it possible? I guess not in a car but how about on a bike? I'm talking relitivley stock gearbox and stuff.

A Suzuki Huyabusa is the closest thing i can think of (and cheap). I believe that does 80 in first.

100 in second is possible in a Lambo. But not many vehicles are capable of that.

You could gear a car to 100 in first, but unless its a pure drag car, why?

any car will do a 100mph in first gear.....
......after you drop it out of a plane.

just out of curiosity, why are you asking?
Also, most stock speed advancements through the gears are relatively equal. Such as e36, you can roughly go 30 mph more in every gear. Assuming that most cars are like this, even with only a four speed gearbox, you'd have to have a car that could go 400 mph.

why i'm asking: just wondering...
thanks Bimmer325, that's the one :D

:nono Incorrect. Both the new R1 and the ZX10R break 100MPH in first STOCK. The ZX-10R in one test was actually wheelie-ing and spinning the back tire AT THE SAME TIME as it crossed the 1/4 finish line!

Not desirable. It happened during a few of the runs and was mentioned in the review notes of an early road test.

Speed in a gear just has to do with gear ratio. You could go 200 in the same gear if you had it geared right, but the issue becomes having enough power for that crappy of gearing.

sorry but that is a dumb comment. someone wondered if a vehicle could do that in first gear, turns out, there is! so we enlightened this guy to that fact. why that is dumb to ask that i dont know? were you aware of the the zx10r doing over 100 is first gear? is that common knowledge that everyone on this board knows? i had to learn that fact along the way, and lets assume you didnt know that, you would have to learn it to, and there are more than one way to learn this fact. asking is one of them, the other is to just read about it somewhere, hear it from someone, or do it yourself.

My 1987 325e will accellerate from a stop to 80 MPH in 3rd gear. This suggests that if my first gear was third, all 127HP @ 5000RPMS could do 80 in first gear. All of this considered, with the proper rear differential gearing, any modern BMW could do 0-100 in first gear alone.
Not a dumb question since we don't really know the purpose.

The new Yamaha R6 redlines at 17,500 rpm! I bet that bike could do it too.
The new R6 has a race trans in it, meaning short gears for very fast reving. The bike does rev to 17,500 but im guess aobut 60-65 for top speed in 1st. This bike was made to race and nothing more, i have one comming in febuary already bought just waiting for Yamaha to start shipping them.
The bike is going to be a beast no doubt, but it will have short gears for insane accell.
The new R6 is going to be just like a turbo car, power wont hit until 11,000.

Solution: Recall last time you drove a car. Recall you shift point, and your speed. Think. Wonder if you, at the current rate (considering how much rpm you have left), could pass 60mph (some street cars can ie. viper), let alone more, or better yet, 100mph!!!!
Anynody thinkining about CARS would not even dream of this concept, let alone wonder if it's possible (yeah it was real stupid to assume he was asking about cars......who thinks about cars:rolleyes??)
I wasn't being harsh. And I'm really happy for you for giving the guy an answer. *two thumbs up*

As mentioned in a previous post, the ZX10R and R1 will both do it. My 2000 GSXR750 could do an indicated 78mph in first, my RSV Mille does about 60 or so, and has been geared down by about 7%, as first was a bit too tall.
I wouldn't say that a bike such as a ZX10R capable of 100mph in first is without reason. If it was geared to do *only* 60mph in first it would be a somewhat uncontrollable. As it is with a 100mph 1st gear the front wheel would barely be in contact with the ground with ~180hp on tap. A gear that tall is simply to tame the bike a little.

I've had a '04 and an '05 R1. Both bikes were able to do 108 indicated in first gear redlined. I redlined the '04 at 175 indicated in a 5th gear redline.

I'm pretty sure my gsxr 1000 can do 85mph in first although I've never had it more than 60mph in 1st. the front end gets air too easily. I plan to stay alive for a long time.
Fact is, if a car puts down enough power, it will be REQUIRED for it's 1st gear to go above 100mph... However, I'd think it'd be very easy to stall... 700rpm would be a very high speed, meaning starting would be very hard... If the power were to come from high revs, that problem would be closer to being avoided.

Nascars can go 140mph in first. The rest of the gears only make the speed increase by like 20mph though.

They try to use the ECU to tame these bike's in the lower gears to prevent them from fliping over on a newb. My 05'gsxr1000 has gears 1-4 limited in the high rpm's. No biggie, it still rips. In reality you can flip one these things pretty easily.
I think the tall first gear on most of the current crop of 1000cc is there to help handling the bike during racetrack conditions. If you can run in the same gear instead of shifting you'll save time. Those 10th's of a sec add up over the course of a race.
