Ok, someone needs to settle this debate of mine. My buddy chopped a coil off his springs to lower it, and I laughed at him for being a ricer. When he asked me whats going to happen in the long run, I just said shocks would probably go out, but I am not sure whats going to happen. I can assume its not good for the suspesion at all, but what will happen?

It changes the spring rate and I certainly wouldnt recommend it

Yes, but I was asking what the damage would be? The ride isnt as good anymore, but is it going to blow his car up or anything lol

ya....the car will look as if its driving down a bumpy road all the time. this dude here on tinker afb chopped his civic springs and everytime i saw him drive, it looked like he had hydrolics going off all the time....kinda funny looking...but i bet its a pain inside the car

So that's what does it. I was driving and saw a civic in front of me and the rear was bouncing like crazy, I was waiting for him to get air:eek: I figured his suspension was just (&^9 but he probably just cut it.

You wonder why he woulnd't just buy new shorter springs? I mean he went through all the trouble of taking the old shocks off and cutting them then putting them back on? Could have just spent 250$ in the 1st place did the installation and had a better look and a better ride. He is acomplishing neither with just cutting the springs and will most likely have to spend more money later down the road cause other broken things. Ie. shockes shock mounts ect.

Well, bouncing up and down depends on the shock... on my car, yes, it bounces, but on my older civic, blown shocks just drop to the ground, and makes the ride rough os heck.

Some stock shocks have a degree of over travel. When cars "bounce" its normally because the suspension is bottoming out on bump stops or the limits of travel. I once knew a kid that cut his springs and went over a dip and the spring came out of the perch and tore into his front tire. If you are going to play with the suspension, do it right... springs, bump stops, shocks and mod ified sway bar joints etc. Proper re-alignment and front end geometry is also important for both handling and tire wear.

that kid aint got nothing on the previous owner of my 240sx...after bottoming/bouncing rear shocks i finally got some used replacements for temporary use. i get the old one offs and wipe some dirt off. low and behold eibach springs on a stock strut. i look at the bottom of the spring and its been CUT. CUT AFTERMARKET SPRINGS. not only that but he didnt even seat them properly... needless to say the strut could be compressed with 50lbs :confused

I am Japanese and resent this common use of the word "rice". Why would you want to represent yourself as a bigoted racist? You probably aren't racist, but you have brought great dishonor to a mighty grain that has sustained my people with carbohydrates for millenia.

Sorry, I am a goof. I am probably far more offensive then just saying "rice".

Theres rice, then theres honda owners.

Rice: The kid that gets a honda for $50 with rust holes in every body panel, he dosnt grind the rust off, but gets 56 lbs of bondo and plugs the holes, he then spray paints his car. This to him adds atleast 45 HP, then he cuts the door handles off puts some duct tape over them, and paints the tape (theres a guy in my town who auctually did that). Dont forget the rice cans, neons, and 2 of the 4 rims he needs. Body kid was jbwelded on and 1/4 of it is off or coming off after he drove over several curbs.

Honda Owners: Despite inadiquite FWD, they do it right. Pro paint job, nothing rice rigged. They may have some good HP. Real suspesion, probably still a rice can, but their car looks decent for a honda. Body kits fit and all the pieces are on. This owner does not ass rape his car over curbs and respects it.

Just so you know!

Back on topic, so the worst thing is the springs shoot out? I am sure the shocks are blown by now.

It is such a bad idea that it should be corrected on any car blanketly. There's not much more to it, just don't f'n do it, lol.

Yeah i love seeing cars bounce around. Its funny watching their car have a seizure on a flat road because the owner is a dumbass poor kid trying to save money.

Blown shocks, bottoming out, could cause a wreck from bouncing around so much.

Why doesn't he just buy some lowering springs? They aren't that expensive..

I find it really funny that you all think theres some magically voodoo going on at the spring vendors you buy lowering springs from...

Tell you what, go VISIT a custom spring vendor or manufacturer with specs in hand sometime and watch what they do. It's not rocket science, and guess what, they do CUT the spring in the end!

The resultant spring rate of cutting one live coil from a spring is not automatically "stoopid bad" by default. It depends on the car. Lessons learned on a Honduh cannot be translated to a Volvo, for instance. (Older Volvos respond very well to one coil cut off the front...)

The bouncey ricer effect is the result of leaving the stock shocks in place, be it with "real" lowering springs, or with cut springs...

Now, this assumes a spring with one "unfinished" end... if both ends have a finished dead coil on the end, then no, you obvously can't cut that off.

Stop making it sound like cutties are ok as long as you change the shock.

This thread is about backyard BS cutties, not 'go to the shop, work out the spring rates and make it custom' cutties.
