Why not just go to uhaul and rent one of their car trailer? I can't remember the price but it wasn't too expensive when i last asked them.

Yeah, rent a car trailer.

There are very few companies that will rent a single or double axle car trailer.
The companies that WILL rent a trailer will sometimes require you rent a truck as well (Uhaul has this policy in some states)

Im serious about towing the car backwards.

Uhaul didn't require me to rent a truck. They just asked me what i was going to use to tow the trailer and what kind of vehicle was going on the trailer.
Mainly to see if the tow hitch was strong enough.

I would never tow a car with only 2 wheels on the ground.

The only way I would tow any BMW is on a flatbed/trailor.

OK, since no one really answered your question I guess I will take a shot at it. I used to own a towing company and have towed MANY cars with a wheel lift so its very similar.

First, towing from the drive wheels is the best way to tow a rear wheel drive car if you can't trailer/flatbed it. The down side is some states require the vehicle being towed with a set of wheels touching the road (dolly or wheel lift) must face the direction it is going in, if not on a tow truck with flashing lights. Why you ask? Some moron driving behind it might think its coming at him. Don't ask, that is the real reason. :rolleyes :confused

Now if your state or the states you are going into have this law, you must tow it with the front wheels on the dolly. If you were going a shorter distance of maybe 25 miles or traveling under 50 mph, I would say you would be fine. Since you are going 700 miles at highway speeds, pull the shaft to be on the safe side. I know a guy who messed up his automatic Mercedes 190e by towing in on a dolly for about 100 miles at 70mph. Not good. Yours is a manual trans so it is less of a chance of problems but you don't want to go 700 miles and find out you messed up. Pull the driveshaft and you should not have any problems.

i'd get a flatbed, it's not that much more to rent.

Where are you taking it? I'd just tow it backwards and 'risk' it. Any pics? A Bavaria was my first car and some day I'd like to get another for a project car...

Thanks for all the suggestions, I really wanted to fly out and drive back...but w/ 32 yr old mechanicals, 138k on the clock, it seemed like a gamble....soooo I drove my 4.7 jeep over Vail pass(during a freak snowstorm) to the SW corner of Ut., checked out vehicle (exceptional for 32 yrs old) hooked up a uhaul and towed it back. 10 hour drive each way. I'm tired!

You left out the details... How did you tow it back? Dolly or Trailer? Front or back?
