BMW to Build an Assembly Plant in India
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) - Automaker BMW AG said Wednesday it will build an assembly plant in India and expand its network of dealerships in the country.
Munich-based BMW said the plant, which will assemble 3-series and 5-series models for sale in India, will be located in Chennai and will begin production by 2007.
Building the plant, which will employ up to 800 workers, and expanding the dealership network will cost about 20 million euros ($24 million), it said.
``The Indian automobile market offers significant growth potential in the long term. With our increased presence there, we will be well positioned to fully tap into this potential,'' Chief Executive Helmut Panke said in a statement.
The company said it hopes to have annual sales of 150,000 BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce cars throughout Asia by 2008.
Once finished, the plant in India will give BMW 23 production sites in 13 countries.
Shares of BMW were up more than half a percent to close at 36.46 euros ($43.72) in Frankfurt trading.
I thought this was more shocking until I read that they already make BMW's in 13 different countries. You learn something new everyday.

What models are still made in Germany? And obviously they produce some models at various locations, right? Is there a list of which plant produces what?
So much for that new car smell?
I apologise.

Does this mean that since the cost to manufacture offshore will be significantly less. The BMW sales price will also be discounted- reduced ?

haha, Indian BMW!!!! THe car maker is becoming a joke, not that its not already with bangle!
Yea, they have plants in Africa and Russia as well (not so positive on the africa part). Honestly, I want my BMW made in Germany, by Germans. It's not even that I don't trust indians to produce a quality product, and BMW only hires quality employees anyway, so they could build it in ethiopia and it'd be the same in terms of quality, but I want a damn german built auto, that's why I bought it.

BMW already has a factory in China.
Last time I checked, their factory in South Africa assembled only 325i sedans.

I bought a Mercedes made in Hicksville Alabama....and it sucks!.
I won't make the same mistake again.
If it's not from Stuttgart or Munich, it's not German.
Any other place, Alabama, India, China.... are all in the same league to me.

Well, suit yourself.
Just so you know, Lamborghini was owned buy the Indonesians for a while, and if the Saudi's were to pull out of Citibank, what you now know as the world's biggest bank would cease to exist.
The've got a term for it that justifies everything, "Global Economy" :rolleyes

Well the Z4/X5 are not branded as AMWs so my guess is no.

I remember while working at a Porsche dealership that a customer brought his brand new 928s4 back because it had something banging around the passenger side. There was a empty beer bottle in the door!

Not to mention m3s also. I agree I want my german car to be made in germany but that's very unlikely these days with any car brand, unless it's a really expensive model.
Good to see BMW investing in 3rd world countries it should help bring their economies up to speed.

that's a little ridiculous. but, at least as I read that, the plant in India is just for the 3's and 5's to be sold in India. . . meaning that they're not going to be exporting those vehicles to other countries.
I mean, by the people for the people is a fine idea, just don't bring those IMWs over here!

Oh geez people, cars from this plant are only going to be sold in India and _maybe_ other parts of south east asia. Besides, like the first post says, BMW has plants in 13 countries. Some BMWs are neither built by, nor designed by BMW. Hell, even Porsche doesn't build all of thier own cars, they contract out the assembly work.
