View Full Version : Looking for: 1 tweeter and 1 mid for a 98 E36 (HK option)

Now that I have replaced the POS stock head unit (with an eclipse 3424), I can actually determine that two of my front speakers (driver's side door-mid and passenger's side tweeter) need to be replaced (buzzy / blown).

Wondering if someone here has, in good working condition, the HK speakers I need. If so, send me a PM / email.

PS:I rewired the HU harness today to output the HU speaker level outputs to the HK amp (I've been using the ~ 3V preamp outputs for the last few days)

Better drive to the sound (as a result more current, voltage), and definately way more volume. Maybe a very little loss of crispness to the sound compared to the preamp outputs, but extremely negligable ( I might even be imagining it). Overall, a tremendous improvement over the stock headunit, . .car sounds totally different now. I can actually hear the HK "subs" (bass units, in reality) now.

As I've opined before, please consider changing your head unit before upgrading other parts of (the E36) sound system, at least if you have the HK system.

Thanks to many, esp. JPWheeler and El.duderino for patient advice rendered.

Vin

** BUMP **

and a question ....

Indications are that I'm out of luck, but I though I'd ask here before hunting down replacements => "any other 2 or 3 way components that I can replace the HK front set with while using the stock HK amp with the inbuilt crossovers"

Thanks, Vin

No.

Bypass that amp to run speakers off the head, or run a new amp.

BavarianSoundwerks seems to have a set that will work on that amp (rumored) but I've talked to Jason plenty and he never confirmed (nor denied for that matter... ?) the existence of such a set.

I've often replaced the hk speakers with the non-hk factory speakers and have been more than pleased with that result.

My opinion is wholly biased, as I see any of BMWs "premium" sound systems as anything but

I hate DSP, HK, and the like. The M Audio system in the 01 m5 we have here is nice. (nice, period)

Our section moderator JayHudson has had a set of factory speakers for sale (I don't like the price, but you may, market determines price I suppose)... I don't know if they are new enough though (96 and up to fit your car).

But I'm now running the amp off the speaker outs, as suggested. Thanks. I have an extra 5 channel alpine lying around at home, which I guess I could use off the (now-unused) preouts, but i was trying to keep things simple.

I'll look into it

are you saying that the non-hk are 3 way components, that are compatible with the hk stuff?

i'd really like to set up some T/S measurements for these drivers with Speaker Workshop but don't have time to build the connection jig now. perhaps in the future, .. to provide enthusiasts a better chance of finding replacements , .. but then again, not too many car audio companies supply these parameters anyway :(

I would tend to agree with you, they really are mud, to be polite :)
