You just don't know how to drive it. I have no problems with mine.

Oh ya I have herd that it is quite different to drive not just hititng the paddel eslesially at lower speeds. Last weekend I test drove an 03 M3 but it was manual. God that thing has some get up and go compared to my 99M. It felt great and I think i want one now :devillook
Gop-Dogg.... Would you mind explaining what you need to do with an SMG, I herd that to shift you still let your foot off the gass somewhat but I've never driven one.

Essentially, to get smooth upshifts you need to slightly lift off the throttle just after you pull the paddle. It does take some getting used to (took me about a week to get it to be second nature). The shifts are also smoother if you shift at higher RPMs. The Drivelogic programming is a bit screwy at lower revs and there is a marked change in shift speed when shifting at say 2500 RPM vs. 4000 RPM.
Bitching about SMG without knowing how to drive one is like downshifting without blipping the throttle and then complaining that it's not smooth.

you don't really need to lift to make it smooth. just keep your foot in place. shift is smoother at higher rpms (4k and up) if you are s5 or s6. but normal city driving, i keep it at s3 and it shifts smoothly.

You made your point. Twice. If you don't like SMG, don't buy the car. :confused
Now you can STFU.

Some of us have SMG and love it. I have no problem driving it around the city, and it is perfectly smooth. Figure if you take someone who has never driven a traditional manual and threw them into 3-pedal driving, I bet they wouldn't be smooth their first time either. Maybe the driver is the problem not the transmission...

learn to use the different driving modes.. takesmore time to shift.. is "easier" and more forgiving unlike the higher modes. soft clunking to loud clunking that throw you back :)

Wow...if you're driving is only half as bad as your typing I think we have accurately pinpointed the issue.
I think we all understand you think SMG is not good. I think we all understand your not the sharpest knife in the drawer. 'nuff said.

This is what I've found too. If you shift at a point where the computer thinks you should be shifting for the speed and rate of acceleration it doesn't matter if you lift.
Try the Automatic mode! You'll love it then for sure! :)

ugh relax dude... I have a 6mt I testdrove a smg and it was kinda weird to get used to it, but I can imagine one getting accustomed to it with time.
if it was such a pos they wouldnt have put it in the new M5s.
You are surely entitled to your opinion but to make accurate judgement, you need a test of time, not a one time drive.

Just like a 5 or 6 speed with a foot clutch, it takes a little time to drive it smoothly. The drivelogic setting along with the throttle position determines how smooth and quick the gear changes are. I have been driving a manual clutch transmission for 16 years, and after learning how to drive an SMG I do not think I will go back to a manual clutch.
I respect your opinion but, I do not think you have enough experience with SMG to appreciate it.
One last thing, have you read any of your own posts? They are difficult to read.

its not an automatic, it doesnt have a torque converter to slip up to 4000rpm to make it luxurious and smooth...its still a manual and needs to be driven like one

havent driven the smg, but in know when its time to go with a E46 it will be a 2002 SMG for me............uh, same gear box as the stick, with hydraulic controls and a computer to shift and rev match for you?? that a no brainer, the it does all the work for you, but you still have to know how to position the throttle..........duh, just like a stick. Its in a M3, it will perform to the standards of the pickiest enthusiasts.....damn, I cant wait till i get my hands on one and go down through the gears from 100mph.

I like my SMG. Especially when racing someone in a straightline, I usually pull ahead when they shift. Look at all of the Lambo's and Ferrari's, They all use a similar technology.

The SMGII setup in the M3 is vastly superior to some of the other ones BMW put out, like the Z4. The reason for some early bad press on SMG is lack of driver familiarization. When you first try it out you definitely think it sucks. As others have mentioned, you have to think of it as a manual and lift off the gas about half-second after you pull the paddle to upshift. IMO it also helps to blip for a downshift as it will downshift faster and smoother if you do it right. IMO the software "under-blips" a bit and can be jerky under some situations. By manually blipping to correct rpm or even a little over it will smooth out the shift. The real advantage is that you can use auto mode in traffic and then go to s6 when you want to tear it up down backroads. To properly get the feel for SMG you have to drive it for a min of a couple hours, but pref. like 2 days. I won't say there are days I wouldn't like a manual, there are. I still have a z3 2.8 w/ 5spd and I love rowing through the gears. But, overall, the SMG is a better daily driver alternative IMO. The press has been very kind to the latest iteration, SMGIII, like in the new M5.

The SMG's do take some getting used to from what I've heard. They're excellent on tracks once the driver gets used to them.
SMG is a great option on the Bimmers, IMHO.

i just bought an '02 M3 smg, and i love it. I got it because i didnt want to learn stick on my M3. The car drives great. Im not comfratable with using the paddles but i love using the shifter. I shift around 7500 to 8000 rpm and have no problems. Its smooth and powerfull. My friend who drives stick just couldnt get the hang of it, because he's in that mindset that if its not manual its just not good. lol. Also bmw reported that the SMGII shifts better and faster than any human, but its just their word you have to take. All i know is that i love it.
