My local independent shop actually recommended, based on their experience, against the aluminum thermostat housing. I had mine replaced when I did my thermostat, and kept a plastic housing. They said they had less problems with them, even after reading what we've been reading on the forums (about advantages of the alumnium housing).

Just some food for thought.

yeah they were against the aluminum piece because of its longevity. they need your business, of course theyre against it.

Please elaborate. The plastic one will ALWAYS break. The aluminum one will never break, unless you smash it with a hammer.

Nope, they have actually taken off more than they have installed, due to problems people have run into with them (I cannot remember the specific problems, he listed a few).

My plastic ones have never had a problem.

I wouldn't make assumptions like that, based on zero fact. They are the most reputable BMW shop in the Northwest. Great guys, and they are not going to lie to simply generate more business. If they always did that, someone in the know would figure out the scam - and the jig would be up. In fact, several times they have recommended me stay away from a specific route I would've taken because it would cost me more money (on parts and labor).

stylzs - ICV = Idle Control Valve.

Steve

EDIT: I should point out that my engine fan has been removed.
