It's possible that this rumor refers to the brand new, one off series 1 2002 tii that the BMW factory is producing from left-over parts.

But it's also possible that it refers to BMW's entry level car. In Europe, the 1 Series will do reasonably well because buyers there have different expectations of the German marques that in the US have become associated with luxury and performance (BMW and Mercedes-Benz). To compete in the US, BMW has considered selling the top-end 1 Series with a larger capacity motor and calling it a "2" Series.

At least, that's what I've heard. It's been a while since I followed this kind of thing, though.

I dont think its a rumor since the agency I referred to has picked up the job. I also spoke about it with the creative director there. We'll see, I am sure pics will leak out eventually.

If there is I guarantee it will not come to the U.S. BMW doesnt want to stoop to the level of vw, honda and others as evidenced by the 1-series... :rolleyes
If there were a new 2002 or 130i offered in the states. I would buy it.

Recently, myself and Uberpanzer saw a 1 series on the 78. Maybe 2 months ago. It had Baja CA plates, so it isn't here in the US yet. We trailed the car for a while, and the people in it must've thought we were crazy. Maybe that is what is coming out. I know it is SUPPOSED to soon.

Actually, that's exactly what BMW is doing. The real question is whether they'll add competition to the Mini, which is currently BMW's direct competition against VW GTIs and Honda SIs.

But then, the ///M2 would spank R32s all day long. This may end up being the only e81 imported to the States, however, and will likely be appreciably more expensive than even an R32. But I just can't believe a well optioned, low weight ///M car priced in the mid 30s wouldn't do well here.

I guess I just thought it might be BMW using the "new" tii in it's advertising, without actually introducing a new "2002" model. Maybe a reference to the old "Giant Killer" or "Fast. Faster." ads? Nissan did the same thing, comparing the early Sentra to the 2002.

If you're right though, I think that'll be a big deal. I look forward to hearing what you find out.

Man I think they'd be playing with fire -- I mean you know how nuts we are .. it would be very very hard for them to make a new 02 that the old schoolers could stand.

They could do it. Just be very hard to capture the essense .. it'd have to be much lighter than the usual modern BMW -- and you know they'd want to make it aerodynamic (we drive BRICKS!).

it'd be cool to see one, but like you say they'd have to get the look right -- and make it corner like a mofo

I recall seeing a magazine about 3 years ago and it talked about BMW building a new 2002.

Bmw's suck in the looks department nowaday's I sure as heck do not wish that they basterdize the classic look with modern day horror.

Don't be cheap like the american manufacturers and bring stuff back. There is a reason why stuff is classic and no new car could ever have the same essense of the Old Skool.
