I have a 92 525i, goldish in color, and I was wondering what the actual color is. Is there a placard or something that lists the actual color code/name? Most cars do, but I haven't found it.

did you check the usual places? inside the door jam, under the hood.....
if the car has been painted the sticker may have been removed....

Your paint code should be on the underside of the hood on the passenger side. You can also find the paint code on the build sheet for your car. The build sheet is under your back seat. You have to remove the entire lower portion of the back seat, which just pops up from the front. Them look closely where the leather meets the foam in one of the rear corners of the seat that you removed and you'll see the tip of a little rolled up piece of paper, that is your build sheet and it will have the paint code on it (along with every other bit of info on your car right down to the option codes).

Was Kowached just seeing if I was gullible enough to pull out my back seat? Well, I was! Seriously, I did pull out the seat, it needed vacuming and I cleaned/treated all the leather this weekend. Still no luck with the paint code, only thing I found was on air pressure/engine specs.

I didn't find it the first time that I looked either. My build sheet was rolled up and looked like the edge of an old Visa receipt and it was tucked into one of the back corners (don't remember which side, sorry) in between the leather and the foam of the bottom seat cushion. Only an edge was sticking out. I also cleaned and vacuumed under there...
On my build sheet it states that my exterior color is:
668/ SCHWARZ 2
And my interior color is:
N6SN /L BEIGE E36 SANDBEIGE E38/STANDARDLEDER
The sheet is there, I'm going to laminate mine, then put it back under the seat, I'm flattening it out right now in a dictionary. Maybe and edge of yours is not sticking out and you just need to feel around the edge.
It also contains all of the 3-digit "Option Codes" that the car was built with, I've tracked all of them down except for 4 or so of them.
Finding this was very important to me because I did not purchase this car new and it has helped me verify what options I believed that I had.

Hi DJV,
Could it be that the previous owner of your car removed the sheet? Hopefully not, but you never know...

Mitchell,
I'm pretty sure it is gone, the previous owner probably thought it was junk.
Hello to Amsterdam, I used to live in Bitburg, Germany and traveled to Maastrich and Amsterdam occasionally.

Too bad :( ! It would have been nice to have the sheet I think. I found something like that in the glove compartment of the E34 520 I used to own. I wasn't sure wat it was, but took it out anyway and I have kept it. I still have pieces of all the bimmers I used to own.
You used to live in Bitburg? Where do you live now, still in Germany? I've heard of Bitburg but have never been there.

kowached,
Am I correct in the assumption that you pulled the sheet out of an E39? I think DJV i referring to an E34. Maybe BMW did it differently on the E34's...
If it's an E34, look under the hood on the drivers side.. there should be sticker on top of the strut tower. fairly big, you can't miss it (about 3"x1"). It says the name of the color. then look up the code # on http://www.circlebmw.com/parts/paint.htm. if it's not there, check the passenger side. If not, they took it off. Call a dealer and give them your VIN.. they'll have that info for you.

I am just very glad this forum exists! I racked my head trying to find the darn paint code (Could not locate them anywhere that I would have thought as usual suspects). I found mine under the back seat as described on this thread. Of course, it looked like crumpled sheet of computer paper and it was just stuck into the crevice of the sheet, so I would normally have thought that my daughter somehow lost some paper, so I am just glad I did not throw it out.
Thanks! BTW: Where do you guys find this information?

I live in Massachusetts and have an '02 5301, Blue Water Metallic, Paint Code 896.
Is there a way to find out what brand the car was originally painted with? (as between Glasurit, Spies Hecker, Standox, other)
Which one of these paint brands is the best?
Thanks.
