Just a quick question, I need to jack my car up, but all I have access to here are 4 jackstands and the BMW jack that came with my car. I talked to the guy down the road and he might have ramps, but its still up in the air.

Is there a safe way to jack up the car using only jackstands, the BMW jack, and possible ramps?

I've used the oem bmw jack to lift the car up so I can lower the car onto sturdy jack stands before.

Just support it at the oval holes in the frame directly under where the OEM jack goes. You'll be fine.

Well I get the car on jack stands using just the bmw jack, get everything together to replace my tranny fluid with some Royal Purple, and guess what? I'm missing the socket to take off the drain and fill plugs :mad Oh well, guess it will have to wait until my next day off next week :(

My brothers have a trick up they do for vehicles like yours. They lay a couple of wide boards under each front tire and drive on top of them. This gives them just enough room to put a floor jack under the frame to raise the car. Then you can place the jack stands under the frame.

This will save you some time and effort.

I do the same thing. I actually bought a 2x6 then i cut two 18" pieces then cut two 12" pieces. Then i crewed them together. and when i go to raise the car i put them in front of either the back or front depending on what i am working on. Then drive the car up on them. This will raise up the car about 4 inches. Then it gives me enough room to put my floor jack in action. :redspot

Stock jack is ok for emergency situations. But dontget in the practice of using it. With the round bottom if you dont have it aligned just right or if someone leans on the car it will slip. Almost happened to me once. One tip. Now i take out one of the back seat floor mats and put it on the ground then put the jack on top of it. Usually helps it from not slipping.

This is exactly what I do. It's much safer and you can store the boards anywhere. :buttrock

i can't believe that people actually use the factory jack for putting the car on jackstands. must take forever. i can get my car on 4 stands in literally 5 minutes. i LOVE my light ass sears aluminum jack.

I would not recommend using the stock jack unless you absolutely need to. I have had it fail on me before. The jack literally bent and twisted, and the car nearly fell. Luckily, I had a jackstand underneath for backup, and the I wasn't under the car.

ooh.

just a quick word of advice --get a new drain and fill plug from the dealer (like a buck each i think)

they are difficult to get out. I use a bolt extractor (socket with bladed 'teeth') and a three foot cheater bar and i still have to really torque on it.

by the end the plugs are usually toast and i am glad for the back-ups.
