is there any better year than others to go for a used Mini S, or should I just buy the newest one I can afford/find?
I know little about these cars or productions changes since the import in the states a few years ago so any help is appreciated.

I think the resale values on Mini's are way too high. So high that I think it's not worth it to buy used.
MSRP on a new 2006 Mini Cooper S (MCS) is $20,600.
At a minimum, you probably want the sport package ($1,400) and the Limited Slip Differential ($500). The other stuff is just fluff.
So for $22,500, you can get a brand new virgin 2006 mini. You get to break her in
The only catch...there's a 5-6 month wait after you put in your order.
The other option is buying a new 2005 MCS from the dealer lot. There's a shipment of mini's coming in the next couple of weeks. You can probably pick up a nicely equipped MCS for around $24-26k. Dealers make more money the more options you pick.

MSRP on an 06 went up $200 from 05 and there is a $550 transportation fee to add to that. Buy an 05 or 06. For 05 they regeared the tranny for better seat of the pants feel and to make it more difficult to stall out. Dont mess with buying a used one, youll pay close to sticker. MINI of Charleston can get one in 6-8 weeks and has a few 05's on the lot that are available including a chili red S with no options and a p white S auto.

I bought my car with the Madness Stage 4 kit for 22k cash. There are deals to be had out there... you just have to find them :buttrock.
