Hello everyone.
As some of you may know, I am working on a 1972 3.0 CS. Right now, I am putting in a 1987 735i engine and a 1991 735 motronic setup in the car. I know this won't satisfy my power needs, but it's a start. Anyway, I'd like to know if a S38 head will fit on a M30, as I'm sure DOHC would certainly make significantly more power, as then the engine would pretty much be a S38, aside from pistons/crankshaft. Not directly a 5-er question, but since most of the M30 cars were 533/535's, I figured if anyone would know on bimmerforums, it would be here. Thanks for any help you can give.

I believe you're going to run into some differences that would be more trouble than it would be worth.
Why wouldn't you simply go with a complete S38? Yes, it would cost a bit more than the M30 you already have, but I think the results would be worth it.
You might call Brett Anderson at KMS (440-564-7574) as he recently completed a very similar CS conversion with a Euro S38B38 3.8l motor.

I was trying to avoid pulling out the engine once again, as once was enough for me. (for now, anyway) This swap was done because the PO blew the block, otherwise I probably wouldn't have tried it. (his mechanic crimped a coolant hose)
I guess if I want to go this route I had best start finding a parts car, as I have read most of the parts between the e28 M5 and the e9 body actually fit, even important stuff like the suspension subframe. (I got it off an old Roundel article.) More importantly, given how rare these cars are getting, I had best get one now, as when I finally have the green to doit, the cars will likely be more than 20 years old. Plus, if I'm going that cray on the car, I may as go all the way and get Metric Mechanic to build me a 3.9 S38 stroker.
As for the differences with the swap, what kinds of issues do you think would come up? The blocks are the same, unless I am mistaken. (Between the S38B35, the one in M6s and e28 M5s)
