warranty after 28k miles, glad I didn't have to eat that one.

Wonder why the clutch went so soon. It wasn't my driving, I have been driving manual for 17 years and the clutch on my m3 was fine at 75k miles, which was when I sold it.

Maybe it was the 400+ horsepower.

Just maybe.

M5 OEM clutch is way too weak to handle the power. it can bearly hold up 540's... just a tad stronger then what the 540 can pump out.

honestly, i would go aftermarket if i were you.

You were lucky they replaced it under warranty. The clutch on my bro's Z3 4-cyl went out at a comparable mileage and they refused to replace anything.

Thanks Dan!

I will go aftermarket but how can I say no to a free clutch and flywheel, besides they told me after it was already done!

true true... if it's free it's for me! :) when this clutch burns out, get an aftermarket one. it should hold up a lot longer and better.

dang... it's great being able to do this stuff yourself... I don't think I could afford to own my 540i-6 if I had to take it to the shop for major maintenance...

Rumor has it BMW NA will replace one clutch under warranty with the M5. What do the aftermarket M5 clutches cost? I swear I've seen the parts for $2000.

where there's an M, there's a 150% mark up.

So expensive to replace a clutch that I'll probably change my driving habits after I have read this. I've been fairly unaware when launching lately so I've probably been more abusive than necessary.

yeah... once that clutch goes, the flywheel starts to "burn".

The 6-cyl clutches don't wear nearly as much and the parts aren't as expensive to replace. Don't abuse it, but don't worry too much about it either. I've heard that a typical 6-cyl BMW clutch will last about 150k if treated properly.

That's good to hear. Do you know much about the lifespan of the 4-cyl clutches?

i just installed a SPEC Stage 3 clutch and JBRacing Lightweight Flywheel myself in my 535. definitely a project but nothing too difficult. it still came out to 1200 for the both of them though...
