i've been reading some of the other posts about noises coming from the rear and guess what...i too have noises coming from the rear. but mine are different.
1) every bump i hit, i hear lots of ratling coming from the rear. almost like things are shaking apart. is ths as simple as shocks and springs or is there something else i should look for.
2) when i change gears (mostly from 1st to 2nd) i hear something that sounds like an aluminum sheet rattling in the rear. what the hell could this be.
thanks

The first one could be a spring on the brake pad, swaybar bushings, or something loose in general.
The second could be a heat shield. Mine would make a fluttering noise when I hit about 20mph because it came loose.
My cousins E30 would make a noise in the rear everytime he hit a bump. It turned out that his bilstein shock was bad, and made quite a bit of noise. There can be lots of things in the back. Check the swaybar tabs, and bushings, make sure they are connected.
I have that same clunk when I shift, and when I go over hard bumps, I hear a metal on metal sound. I think Ryan is right, it has to do with the heat shielding for the exhaust, I need to look under there and see if I have anything rattling around.

Tighten the emergency brake cables located under the emergency brake boot inside the car.

the clunk when going over bumps is a bad rear shock mount.

The rattling could be caused by the metal casing around your catalytic converter being loose. Mine is loose but it doesn't make any noise :dunno
