climate control non functioning lights stay on anyone know how to fix

my fathers 318 i (obd 1) climate control doesnt work the fan will work but the ac heat or anything else for that matter will not function on the control the rear defrost ac and recirculating air button are constantly on and will not turn off. any one got any ideas>?

I'm having the same problem with a 1984 318i. Can push in the recirculating button or a/c button but they won't stay in or lit. I had removed the fuse for the blower and that got rid of the bouncing gauges and whirring sound, but then I realized the aux fan was on that fuse so I put it back in. I now have something wedged into the recirculating button to keep it pushed in just to keep the noise down. Now I'm getting a weird noise when I hit the brakes and it's related to the recirc button because when I let that button back out the noise with braking stops. Used (BMW)....buy my worry!!!! I've never seen so many electrical or water leakage related problems in a car brand EVER.
