I have an '85 318i that needs a transmission. I have replaced the trans once already with a faulty unit which was "good" but seemed to have extremly worn shiftforks. The origanal was just worn out and the inputshaft bearing was very gone. Both of the transmissions were Getrag 240's which i have since read are pretty weak and need to rengineered/rebuilt to begin with. I have found some inexpensive ZF 5 speeds but would love to know if they are reliable at all? Any input would be greatly appreciated on a transmission choice for this "inexpensive" second car.
If anyones done this mod i'd sure love to know what parts i'll need to replace like the clutch/pressureplate/flywheel/shifter/driveshaft and/or coupling.
