My front two AR1's arrived opened the box and they look great.
Just had a question.. Ive seen some before and they said Licensed By "BBS" on them!! These say Licensed by "ASA" Not that big of a deal, but was I seeing things or is that new??
Also, I thought they were made in Germany like bbs, theres a sticker that says made in Korea!! The box says licensed by BBS and made in germany all over it....Anyone know what stock M3 wheels weigh? Contours?
Anyone in San Diego area want a set of Contours let me know. I will be selling them soon.... They do have some curb rash, and the guy who had them before had them refinished but the top layer has chiped and peeled in some places.. Great for a extra set of wheels.
Here are some pics: of the AR1's

That is odd, it should say BBS right after "by" where I've boxed.
Where did you purchase them from.

Humm...
I checked mine out, and they say licensed by bbs.
I had them mounted and shipped, so I do not know
where they were manufactured.
Maybe Jim@tirerack can help......??
I am curious as well.

Stock M Double Spoke IIs 7.5 x 17 are 21.9 lbs; 8.5 x 17 are 22.9 lbs. Contours are a bit heavier IIRC?

Weird. I have AR1's. Says "BBS" in that spot.
I wonder if ASA's license expired? Or if BBS was losing too many sales to ASA or what?
I always thought it was weird for a product to have "licensed by" on it. It gives the impression that BBS endorses, approves or is closely affiliated with ASA. ASA certainly has cashed-in on the BBS name - perhaps improperly.
My understanding is that ASA simply bought a license to use some of BBS' manufacturing technology/techniques.

They have always been made in Korea. I always thought that's why they were less expensive than BBS. I am looking to buy some wheels and have narrowed it down to two possibly 3 choices and the AR1's are likely to be my pick.
So where did you get them and, if you don't mind, how much?

Exactly. And I think you're right...BBS prolly got tired of having their named stamped on a wheel that costs 50% less than a comparable BBS, and were losing sales to them...

Jim, Can you help with this?? Any ideas why? Are they all from now on not going to say BBS on them??
Also, can anyone confirm their affiliation with BBS?

That makes me feel better, they may have just lost the right to use BBS's name, or this set wasn't stamped. I was concerned you had gotten some knock-offs.

I just put on my rears today and looked at mine right now and it just says ASA on it. It does not have the Licensed stamped on it. It says revolution and ASA only on it.
I got mine ordered from tirerack.com. All of them are 18x9. Ill check my other 2 at the shop on Monday.

I'm looking at getting a set of the black ASA AR1's for my E36. Can you order the BMW centers to go with the wheel from TireRack? If not, where can I get the inserts?

I checked my box and it does not say Licensed by BBS. Its says ASA dream technology. The reinvention of the wheel. The center cap that came with the wheel does not say Licensed by BBS also.

Yea, I have that same box, but those boxes were shipped inside a bigger box that was a BBS box(with made in Germany, etc.)
So your two fronts dont say BBS on them either?? What tires are you running? and what size AR1s did you get?

I was thinking about getting some 245/40-18 since I can find a lot more in that size. Tirerack recommends 245/35-18. I dont think there will be that big of a difference. what do you think?

245/35/18 should be fine , the 40`s would be a little taller.

40's are fine right now. Im going to find something wider. Rolling my fenders tomorrow. Ill get pics soon.

Yea, I think im going to stick with the 35's b/c my car is pretty low and don't want to deal with the fender rolling.... Its just the selection and availability is so much smaller with 245/35 vs 245/40....
Oh yea, Tirerack told me that ASA's license agreement was up with BBS so Thats why its not inscribed with bbs anymore....
But they are still made the exact same and what not ;)

A 245/40/18 is not an option for an e36. Way too tall. Just because a tire will fit in the wheel well does not mean it "is fine".
The tallest you should consider is a 235/40/18.
The best sizes are 255/35/18 and 245/35/18.

Yea, thats what I figured. Plus my car is dropped on Koni SA and H&R race.
