Hey guys just finished doing the fan delete mod. in time to test it in 100+F degree So Cal weather. I also installed a set of gauges (oil pres. & temp., and water temp.) to help make sure everything is running ok. I bought the kit from understeer and did/used everything I was supposed to. My question is, what is the car's actual operating temperature. Now I can tell exactly at what deg. the fluid is but it does range plus or minus 20 degrees at any given point once its warmed up. Just wanted to know at what point I should express some concern, 220F?

The most I've seen the needle inch is up to (from what I can read on the VDO gauge) is just at/slighlty past the 210F if I am reading it right. I'll post a picture to see if helps. In the picture I think the upper range is 210 and lower is 200. It doesn't stay long at the 210 once I idle since the aux. fan kicks in.

Main concern is when -if ever should I worry and throw on the heater to help cool down the temp.

I am glad I did this mod since unfortunately did see another statistic on the forum claim a fan explosion today. :(

P.S. I did see a big difference in accelaration on the freeway and street.

Sorry one more note. Depending on how this mod turns out I will finally be installing my underdrive kit I have been sitting on for a year w/o installing.

Thanks for the input - but could you be of some help with the actual issue/question here?

I think difference in performance was my fan and clutch didn't look to be in its best condition. When idling I could notice it was swaying a quite a bit (they didn't look balanced) so it might have been ready to :b_hot blow up.

How can you have a "fan delete"? Isnt that pretty important too the engine's operating temp? (sorry, newb to bmw's)

Pretty much all you need to know. You shouldn't worry.... I don't think it gets THAT hot up in Ontairo. :D

I remember someone once said that the thermostat usually opens up around 215F.... so maybe if it gets higher than that?

The Electric fan can be augmented be an aux. fan on a switch in the front of the radiator.

That will insure you get the proper cooling. :) I deleted my AC so an aux fan is a real reality and a necessity for 114 degree Sacramento traffic and my impending rebuilt head and DASC.

Yes I had planned to look into doing that too. Especially being that I might be installing my underdrive kit soon too. I was under the impression that I would be "adding" another electrical fan and not replacing it. I take it that's what you did? What fan did you replace it with? Thanks for the input.

Well, the Condensor fan is there just to cool the condensor which will help keep your cooler. I will have the late M44 Electric fan and the tFal pusher fan in the front of the radiator. It will keep the rad cooler and keep the engine itself cooler. It'll push more air in there. That's the plan anyhow.

Good plan let me know (or just post a new thread) if and once you got it all worked out. :)

~220F the dumby coolant gauge in our cars will start to leave the 12:00 o'clock position.

not true, I've had mine reading 240+ F before it even considered going for a trip north.
