Definitive method for reprogramming early remotes?

Ok, so my '95 325is has the factory alarm, but it did not come with remotes, so I had to purchase a remote. I have seen the procedure for reprogramming the later 2 button remotes, but instructions for reprogramming the early 3 button remotes are all vague.

I'm looking for someone that has personally done this and can offer a definitive answer on how it's done.

Or is it really just as simple as removing the "chip" from the new remote and placing it in the brain and then removing it?

I don't want to fumble around anymore in the dark trying to find the lock...
