Mini Mania, Inc., announces consumer report of 225 HP for Stage 2 Kit on a BMW MINI Cooper S

Nevada City, CA – July 12, 2005. A Mini Mania consumer reports that at a recent Dyno test of his 2005 MINI Cooper S he was thrilled and more than satisfied to verify the marketing claims of 215 HP for the Mini Mania “Stage 2 PLUS” Kit. The exclusive kit for all years of the MINI Cooper S includes Exhaust Cat-Back and Header, ECU upgrade, Cold Air intake system, 3-piece 15% pulley, PLUS the ULTRIK Water to Air Intercooler. The test, at an independent Arizona specialist, was conducted in the most severe conditions, with ambient shop temperatures reaching 104 degrees. Controlling air temperatures into the combustion chamber is one of the most critical aspects of achieving and maintaining the performance upgrades of the Stage 2 Kit, and Mini Mania’s ULTRIK Intercooler proved it was up to the task.

Brian Steele, a resident of Gilbert Arizona, had a Mini Mania Stage 2 Kit installed on his MINI Cooper S several months ago, but had not tested it until after he completed the installation of the ULTRIK Intercooler. “Although I felt a ‘seat of the pants’ performance increase after I installed the Stage 2 Kit alone, the MINI Cooper S is so sensitive to air temperature that I just knew I had to take the next step of installing the upgraded Intercooler.” stated Steele. “The test results were beyond outstanding and I really felt the difference in my everyday driving.”

“It is great to have our customers prove our point,” said Mini Mania President Don Racine. “Mini Mania puts its products through stringent testing to be certain that our products work as advertised or better. We spent a lot of time in development and testing before we released our Stage 2 Kit, and now the addition of our ULTRIK Intercooler offers the customer a way to keep all that horsepower gained through the Stage 2 Kit.”

Mini Mania’s Stage 2 Kit and ULTRIK Water to Air Intercooler are available directly from Mini Mania and from their network of authorized dealers nationwide. For more information, visit new.minimania.com.

So is that 225 WHEEL horsepower? or crank horsepower?

So is that 225 WHEEL horsepower? or crank horsepower?

It would be my (pedestrian) guess that this is WHP, as I am fairly confident the results were NOT from an engine dyno but a "rolling road" dyno. If it were BHP (CHP) as measured (calculated) from a "rolling road" dyno, a mathematical component would have been introduced for the calculation, and that might be regarded by some as too "theoretical".

That being said, dynomometers can differ in the results that are produced. There are many manufacturers, calibration processes, ambient operational variables and other aspects that can make it hard to compare the same car's performance on different machines on different days.

Also, MINIs can differ in their stock state with regard to HP. One MINI may be somewhat more powerfull than another due to the "tolerance stacking" of the engine components. For instance, a MINI with a badly adjusted supercharger bypass valve may run with less boost (and, thus, less horsepower) that one that has a correctly adjusted BPV.

I'm not disputing Mini Mania's claims, I just think that it is as likely to encounter 10+ WHP over what is claimed as it is 10+ WHP UNDER what is claimed based on the specific MINI and the dynomometer that is used. I would guess that Mini Mania have done significant testing in controlled conditions on a high-end dyno, and 215 WHP is what they have measured as an AVERAGE (average: half of the results below 215, half of the results above 215). And, hopefully, they have gathered these results from testing the kit installed on a number of MINIs.

FWIW,

Actually, what you said would be a median, not an average. :stickoutt Sorry, I know I can be annoying :help

Absolutely! I stand corrected! The average would be the "midpoint" of the data values.

Sorry :embarrasm ,
