Ive got a friend with a 97 e36, he says the gear in the motor to move his seat is broken. How much are motors new, or do they sell the gear? He seemed to believe it was all one part that could only be bought, which is the entire seat back that bolts up into the seat.

Any help is appreciated.

This is a common problem. You cannot buy just the gear you have to buy the whole seat frame. I ended up finding an e36 with powered seats at a local pick-n-pull and I got a couple of the gears and fixed mine. So I guess he has to either pay $400 for a new frame thing or $.40 for the gear if he can find one.

I found a company that makes plastic replacement gears for speedo's on the internet. Their website states that they are working on replacement gears to fix this problem. Maybe if we all inquire they will step up their developement. Otherwise it's a salvage yard or new seat frame.

I have one extra one, however seeing as they are used I'm keeping it because the one I just put in might break soon or the pass. side one might break. I may be able to get a hold of some power seats for cheap that would yield four gears. I'll let you know.

Does anyone know if there's a way to manually adjust the seats? mine is fine but the passenger seat is just too gangsta.

ive made 2 and was successful at my dad's machine shop, but they are gone now because of a wreck ... i made them out of quality teflon, but it gave out after a year, so next up i'm going to try aluminum...

personally right now, i don't have motivation to make some more

dmurray has a good write up on this. It apears that the pictures for the the write up are no longer hosted though. Search and you will find it.
