I'm using the Wolfgang clay bar with lubricant but after claying about 2 fenders and half the hood the clay has turned into putty. It's sticking all over my hands but not on the car. The amount I used was half the bar. I did spray some mosquito repelent before I went outside but I doubt it has anything to do with it. I'm not using too much lubricant either. Any help with this problem would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

P.S. - This is my first time with clay so I guess I could be doing the whole this wrong...

I used clay for the 1st time today too, it was mother's brand and it came with some QD, I used alot of QD, almost the whole bottle, I think too much actually but the clay didn't dissolve or anything, in fact the clay remained relatively dry, it was the body panels that was soaked.

what lubricant did you use?

Same here.
Used Mothers clay bar today for the first time ever. AMAZING!

Clay was firm the entire time and worked wonders on my paint.
I used nearly the entire bottle of quick detailer.

I get similar results with Meguiar's Clay (similar to Mothers), has anyone ever compared the two?

I used nearly the entire bottle of quick detailer.

the QD that came with the mothers clay bar seem to run really badly, and it dries really quickly, after I clayed my paint looked like crap since the QD dried and left the residue. compared to my meguiars QD the mothers was crap, the mothers bottle doesn't spray the QD evenly and it makes it run, thats why I had to use alot of QD because it kept drying out on me while I was claying.

no matter though because you follow up with polish and wax anyway.

I followed up with Klasse twins and let me tell you, the paint looks amazing, for the first time ever scratches don't show up that much in the sun! I used Eagle one nanowax before I discovered this, and the nanowax only lasts like one month before it wears down...

FWIW: I've heard a rumor that some manufacturers put an ingredient in their lube to break the clay down so you have to purchase it more frequently.

I'm not much to believe in rumors, but the first clay bar that I used was from CMA and I found that their bar broke down very quickly when using their lube.

I replaced it with Wofgang's PolyClay and used a spray bottle with Zaino Z-7 (fairly heavy) and water as my lube. The clay bar did not break down at all and I was able to do my entire car including under the rocker panels plus the front and rear valances with a piece about 20% of the full size bar.

Of course, I can't compare directly, but I found it interesting that using Z-7 kept the bar in good shape for the entire claying session. Some experimentation would be in order.

It's probably just a rumor, because with me it was a brand new bar. It took about 2-3 hours for it to break down.

Some clays and lubricants are not compatible. I used mothers with its lubricant--no problem. Used it again with Final Detail from Mequires as lubfricant and clay softened and stuck everywhere. You will just have to ask others what works for them.

I have only clayed once and used blackfire clay and lube. It worked great and didn't dislove at all. Sorry can't help but something is wrong. You were out of the direct sun correct and the paint surface wasen't real hot was it?

I used wolfgang clay too. With Final Inspection. It did tend to stick to my fingers. I cut it up into like 15 parts like David said to, and that worked really well. Keeping my fingers lubricated helped keep the clay from sticking to them, lol, and you need to frequently fold the clay in so it doesnt get saturated with QD.
