here's the story. it doesn't have anything to do w/ my BMW but it does involve a paint job that I paid for on my first car. Anywho, it's 94 degrees here in mesquite today and i guess my dad being the genius he is washes my old bronco in the sun at a local car wash with one of them foam creating brushes. i guess he doesn't think that foamed soap will do any damage to the paint whilst the sun is blasting down on it.
so now the truck's paint job is ruined. A paint job that i proudly spent my first ever summer job working towards, only to be ruined by this fool.
i know i'm burning my dad pretty hard but who cares, i have repeatedly told him the procedures of washing a vehicle and this procedure (washing a car in the sun) is a no brainer, too bad he doesn't have one.
Well I need help from you detailing pros. this is a stage one paint job, no clear coat. the paint is flat from where he left the soap on to dry and it kind of has a whitish discoloration to it. its a blue truck by the way.
What can i do to repair this damage, if it's even possible.
My tools and products are meguiars 3-step, which i have in my garage, a PC and a whole weekend.
Should i clay?
help, this truck looks like ass.

Edit: he was the reason why it needed to be repainted in the first place.

Thanx

That sucks, my friends mom waxed her entire car with Armor All Tire Gel and asked him why it doesn't come off, 3 days later. This was his face...

I suggest you beat the crap out of the old fart. After all, father's day is this weekend....

Get better products. Meg's 3 step isn't going to be agressive enough to remove the oxidation. It's a decent maint. product, but isn't good enough to solve problems.

To recover the paint, you're going to have to strip off the layer that's been trashed. Be prepared to have blue paint on your PC Pads, it's going to come off on a single stage paint. Try 3M FI2 followed by S100 GEPC and S100 Wax. Those products should all be available locally - 3M FI2 (should be at Pepboys/autozones and I've heard some club warehouse stores), S100 is at the Harley Dealership.

Now given he's "trashed" the paint twice, is it worth fixing if it's his truck? Do you think after fixing the paint, he's going to change his cleaning habits? He probally just sees it as a car and just wants the dirt off. He doesn't care what it looks like as long as it runs.

Alright, a verbal bashing and one weekend later I have finished this mess. Here's are my results. Now take into mind this is a stage one paint and it was pretty heavily oxidized when he last brought it home, especially on the hood and roof of the truck.

thanks to you guys the truck looks decent in out driveway now.
My weapons of choice were as listed:
PC rotary buffer
Sonus Foam detailing pads
3M three step (Fine Cut, Meguiars hand glaze and 3M polish, and Meguiars NXT Wax and the 3M Wax.

This process took me the whole weekend but i think the end result was pretty satisfying. I used the fine cut about 4 times on the hood and polished the hood about 3 times, twice with 3M polish and once w/ Meguiars.
I'm pretty worn from the whole ordeal but i thought i would show everyone what a little help from you's guys did.

thanx,
chris

The result is dramatic, according to your initial description. Keep those products handy for when dad washes your truck again.
On second thought, maybe mention to dad that you get great enjoyment from washing your own vehicle. (Rough translation - I'll do it myself!)

lets see pics of the damage before you fixed it (good job btw). I'd like to see if you were being overly dramatic, or if your dad really f'ed up the paint..

I love the old Bronco's..put 120,000 miles on one.
Chill a bit on poor 'ol dad...at least he was washing it. You may find when you have kids, jobs, house payments, a wife to keep happy...that your time to detail cars is real limited too(though I admit a "foaming brush is pretty awful)...but then the kids grow up to be teenagers and keep swiping my cars!!!
