can a new key provided by BMW, be intialized by the user or does the dealer have to do it? Meaning a procedure such as stick new key in ignition turn on and off 6 times ect.????? I have a new key that I don't think was intialized when I got it.

you know something is wrong when they take something as simple as a key and make it complex. what the heck are you talking about initializing it? is it electronicaly coded or something? what year is your car? i thought that was only on newer cars.

It should have been coded to your car. I can't recall if the dealer has to "activate" it, but you shouldn't have to do anything.

well it wasen't in fact the service guy when I called was amazed parts didn't tell me it needed to be intialized. The parts guy told me it was done when they cut the key. You can see why im confused.

It's not simple trust me. Throw in an after market remote start with the wallet key mounted under the dash so the car can remote start with out bi-passing the EWS, then throw in some stupid parts and service people and it even gets a bit tougher. Oh to answer your simple question: since you didn't look at my sig it's 1996 328iC. Oh yea and the key does have internal chip and the iginition is equipped with ring transponder that reads the chip. But I'm sure you knew that you simply must have misunderstood my question.

If you want to be a smart ass about it then i can play that game too. re read my post and you will see that i said a key is simple. and then they had to make it complex with all the electronic crap. ;) Im sry. i cant read the fine print. i didnt realize they put electronic keys in 96's. thought it was still fairly new. and i didnt know how the key worked which is why i asked. hope you fix your key. (lol for some reason that sounds funny to me. )

If you have one key taped up under the dash for the remote start, you shouldn't need your new key to be initialized anyway, right?

You would think not but when I inserted the new key the car wouldn't start and the original key wouldn't either because the new key either triggered the EWS or something on the Avistart 4000. After the EWS cycles then the original key would work. But this is how I fixed the problem. The remote start is an Avistart 4000 FYI. I remote started the car. Entered the car closed and locked the doors. Inserted the new key in the ignition and turned it to the start postion (not actually all the way so the starter spins heheheh). Left it in that postion with the car running for 30 seconds. I assume the Avistart 4000 has to learn the the new key. Then turn off the car and the new and original key now both start the car.
