you change the gasket and machine the head.

cost out of pocket if you're having a mechanic do it for you can be between $500-1,000 depending on the place you go to.

this job requires a good amount of mechanical skill and specialty tools.

why do you believe you cracked your headgasket? They aren't exactly prone to cracking. If you warped your head, that's another issue all together.

I would check to see what independant shops BMWCCA recommends. They usually do the work for a fair amount less money.

Your way off considering that the parts and machine shop costs are almost $500 by themself. Then the price of labor isn't cheap. Maybe he could find a cheap mechanic to do the labor for $500 which is very cheap and who can trust that :confused

expect prices to be around 1500-3000 depending on the shop.

expect prices to be around 1500-3000 depending on the shop. Not sure what parts you are considering aprt of a HG repair, but mine cost about $200, and that includes things like replaement coolant, oil, and the little things like new nuts for the exhaust manifold. Machining cost $122 to deck the head...
I would say $1,500 is a good baseline for a competant indy shop.
