I posted this in Electronics but a search in this forum yielded more relevant threads, but not info I need.
So, I disassembled my center console, which is really disassembling the whole damn interior, and while re-assembling I go to connect the shifter wires and I can't find the mating plug to the connector. Now I had been wiring some stuff of my own so it's very plausible it got pulled under the carpet or something. I have looked everywhere and tugged on every other bundle of wire coming into this area. Where does it originate from? I've done everything short of taking everything apart b/c damn if I do that one more time. So if anyone has recently mucked with this and recalls where those wires come from, let me know so I can go exploring for them. :help

You have to disassemble the dashboard under the instrument light dimmer and there is the connector. Then you need to snake it through the dash to the console. The easier way is just to connect it to the hazzard light.

you're 98 is pre-wired, right? then the connector may have just been burried by other wires as you suggest.... try taking off the obc/console underneath and look there for it... good luck

So the wires/connector from the shifter is only about 8 inches long. So snaking through the dash doesn't sound like my solution.

yes, it's pre-wired. the shifter did illuminate before all this. so i still have the OBC and sunglass tray removed. so i have decent access to this area. what is installed, and what I'm hoping to avoid having to dissassemble, is the glove compartment, the center console base, and the back console, arm rest etc. i don't have my toolset here so that's why this is so irritating. otherwise i probably would just spend the hour and take everything apart while cursing myself the entire time.
so there are basically a few bundles of wires that split off to things like the window buttons, door lock button, hazard light, ash tray light, OBC etc. I've checked all these bundles for stray wires splintering off somewhere else, but no love.
the connector is sizable, 2 prong with mating plastic. where does it come from, anyone?

Solved!
So after removing the rear console I was able to see two little wires go right under the plastic mounting point of the center base console. So the two wires and it's terminating connector were precisedly pinned underneath this plastic. Arrrgh! Just my luck. Now I get to go put everything back together.
So for the sake of completing information, the shifter wires originate from the bundle of wires that also power the rear ash tray, the hand brake detector, the emergency lights and some more stuff that I didn't trace.
