Was walking around midtown nyc... saw a e38 740il with a Dinan 7 badge at the trunk. What is that? Or just another stupid rebadging wannabe?

Yes to your question.
Doesn't mean the car wasn't a wannabe though.

It IS possible...although...not all of us advertise it. :shifty
The Dinan badges are not exactly easy to come by...so it was most likely authentic. Best way to verify is see if they have a serial number under the hood. That is Dinan's way of helping prevent fraud on resale.
BTW...in order to get a serial number and trunklid badge you have to hit a certain number of "points"...so...just adding a chip does not make your vehicle a Dinan.

True, DINAN 7's are rare. You really have to be crazy to spend the money to accumulate enough points to register and receive the badge. There are certainly other performance alternatives available for alot less $$$$. I personally was concerned about voiding any warrenty on my E38 and selected the DINAN mods as a peice of mind option.

Yes... in fact the 740 as opposed to the 750 has the most Dinan mods possible. I was drooling looking at my official Dinan catalog at the Stage 3... 400 HP out of the V8 after supercharging, but then you must go with 18" rims... and a whole bunch of other clutter I didn't like... not to mention when I was shopping around for quotes via Google... it looks like a Stage 3 is like $40 Grand (*OUCH*)... considering that I'm not wealthy and not about to pay twice as much on my car as I paid to buy the thing... it's kind of a thing I'd consider getting used or not at all.
