Engine Temp too high??

So i was driving my father's new Mini S today and i looked down and relized that the engine temp was way above 140 which appears to be midrange. I pulled over and checked the coolant, it was fine. It wasnt a warm day out and i hadnt been running that hard....i was wondering if this is normal or if anyone else has had this problem or should i just call BMW???
