On a 97 750IL, the head unit works good and plays CDs and Tapes but will NOT tune. Another words, I cant listen to the radio. ONLY CDs and Tapes. What could be the problem? Needs a new headunit? Thanks

I have a '97 740, and it will only tune to 70's Rock stations. What type of music are you trying to listen to?

...sorry, I haven;t had my coffee yet.

Is the display blank when you select the radio? or do station numbers display on the unit, but no sound?

You press SEEK and the numbers just keep going and wont stop. All the lights work good but the radio wont find a station.

First, try and mannually tune to a local station that you know has a strong signal. just see if teh station comes in, even weak...

Pull the head unit out and make sure the antenna cable is attached. That would be the first thing I would check. Seek functions (I certainly don;t know for sure if this applies with this system, but I would think so) typically look for fairly strong signals.

Sounds to me like your radio somehow disconnected itself from the antenna. What happens when you manually tune into a radio station? Do you get anything or just static?

Ok, I manually tune to a local station and nothing happens. NO SOUND. I've tuned to every station possible and still DEAD, NO SOUND. I will take the radio out tomorrow to check the antenna.

OK, so I turn my car on today and radio starts working with NO problems, I drive for about and hour. Turn the car off, go to a store, come back, turn car back on and NO radio again. I took it to BMW and they said it could either be the AMO or RADIO. Anyone have any personal experience?

If you manually select a station and get audible static then it's an antenna issue. If you can't get static at any volume, it's a tuner issue.

UPDATE actually....now it starting to work ON and OFF. EXAMPLE:

Strong FM station is playing, after 2 min, BOOM from the speakers and radio goes out. I tune to different station, plays for 2 min, BOOM from the speakers and the radio is out. Im driving and I hit a bump, the radio goes out sometimes and sometimes NOT. Sometime there is static and sometimes not.

I'm stumped for an answer. Maybe a loose connection or just a bad radio. But I'm just guessing now. Do you have a CD or cassette player? Is that working all of the time?

Cassette player in the front and CD Changer in the back work PERFECT, NEVER PROBLEMS

DO a search... It's a common problem. Mine does the same thing. I haven't fixed it thou and mine doesn't play tapes either.
