ok, installed the brakes w/o any problem last weekend and the "check brake linings" is still being triggered. tried the turn the key to 2nd position for 30-45sec and then turn on the car w/o success. my thoughts are that the back brake sensors are the ones triggering.

that leads into my next question, what are some good rear brakes for stock rotors? Akebono doesn't offer any rear brakes for the e38...not that i could find anyway

I installed my Akebono ProACT Ceramic Pads over the weekend. So far - no dust or noise. I'm glad these came with self-adhesive anti-rattle pads.
My rears - I left Mintex reds on. They are clean and relatively quiet.

I'm looking at the ceramic pads made by Hawk Performance.

Mommy's brakes need replacement, sooo...I'm thinking Brembo rotors (non GT) and the Hawk ceramic pads and while we're there, replace the front bushings and all four shocks.

I gotta get away from this... :(
I almost pulled the trigger on a $25k complete Dinan S3 package for the '01. I miss my Baby and I'm tired of the guys that bought into the Led Zeppelin hype thinking their CTSV's are badass.
G-Power is supposed to be resuming road testing of Baby this week and I'm thinking another couple of months at most and "The Bitch" will be back...Summer School will be back in session :redspot

It's a sickness...a real sickness... :(

Hey Simeon,
It was a toss-up between Akebono and Hawk for me. I knew I wanted ceramic, but brand didn't really factor in (I read favorable reviews on Tirerack).
I've heard that ceramics can be hard on rotors. Not confirmed.
Looks like you are up to no good again, Sim :devillook. Are you swapping the springs too? Might make sence since everything's apart anyway...
Message for Baby: Get well soon! :(

I don't know...I have an appt with Mando & Maestro (Salloum Bros @ VAC) for this afternoon to diagnose the car.
Maybe a package deal can be arranged...I gotta conserve the swambolis because G-Power may call any day now and then a trip to the Fatherland is in the offing. If I drop major bank in mods for Mommy, The Directress of Domestic Engineering may exact more furniture & what not for the homestead :( in her usual quid pro quo way of doing things...still I miss my Baby...
Today is a beautiful day...perfect for breaking the tires loose in 2nd and drifting through intersections...& fucking w/ drivers of garishly decorated imports with the obligatory nipple lights and coffee can sized mufflers trying to be "Pimp My Ride" wannabes...

Good luck! (Time for a little corporate restructuring? Is there a new CFO in town?) I'm taking it nice and slow (mods, that is). I can't wait to see an E38 pop up on "Pimp My Ride" or "Overhauling". Should be fuckin' hellarious (and probably very short) show!

sweet! i'll do some research on both the Hawk and Mintex right now. what about the axxis pads? i think Duane (TitaniumSeeker) has them on his, but he's also running upgraded rotors.

does anyone have any experience/insight w/ the "check brake linings" warning?

I would do a cluster reset. i think that the faults are stored in the cluster. send me a PM if you need assistance in navigating the cluster tests. Ill look in my training materials for the detailed description on how to do it.

I neveg got Hawk, but Mintex did not come with pads. I had to cover the backs with Anti-Squeel (sp?) goo and let it sit overnight prior to installation.
Not too bad, but messier.
So far, after about 120 miles - Akebono's Ceramic ProACT (front only) are great! Clean and super quiet. Those anti-rattle pads are great.
For me - the combination works very well. TireRack delivered in 1 day!

i didn't see Mintex listed on tirerack...are the rears the same on the 750 & 740? so how long have you mintex's on?

the pads are great...i'm having the same results! if i had the options, i would rather have the pads. maybe Simeon or someone else knows about the hawk's

Sorry, Akebono Ceramic are from TireRack (about $80). That's what I have in the front.
Mintex were from BavAuto. I replaced my front and rear stock pads with Mintex reds, when the wear indicator came on. That was about 2 years ago. The dust problem was better, but the noise was unbearable (I used a ton of anti-squeel too). About 8 months ago I replaced the front only with Pagid pads. The noise, although still noticable when brakes got hot, got better, but the dust was killing me. About 2 weeks ago I replaced the front with Akebono ceramic (came with anti-rattle self-adhesive plates, a joy to work with). The rear are still Mintex. Result: No noise, no dust, happy Gene!

As always, "your mileage may vary" and this is my personal experience with my '99 740i. I still have original rear disks but the fronts are new stock replacement (no holes or slots either). No warping or excessive wear yet.

Good luck!

It sucks that you can't get the Akebono pads for the rears as well because I like the results you're getting with them. My brake indicator just came on due to the rear pads being worn. You said you're running the Mintex reds on the rear currently with no noise?

Nevermind, I found them here: http://www.autopartsworld.com/2001_bmw_750il_brake-pad-set_parts.html

Edit: I followed the link to the Akebono brand, but it appears when I revisited the site to order that they aren't Akebono's :(

You are correct. Mintex in the rear, Akebono in the front, so far (150 miles on Akebono, 5000 miles or Mintex - all is quiet!

If you are a "do it yourself"-er you should know the condition of your pads. At all times. I think the brake wear sensors are silly so I simply shorted the wear sensor leads in the housing. To reset the wanrning simply disconnect the negative battery lead for about 15 minutes. Stu

I agree personally, but I can see where it would prevent rotor damage for many many people who have cars so they can just 'drive it' from point A to point B.

I'm considering shorting out mine temporarily as there is plenty of life left in my rear pads (IMO) but I don't want to see the light on anymore.

The light gets tripped at around 1.5mm so if the system is functioning propery id say they are just about done.

Mine got quiet immediately. I assume you applied plenty of "brake anti-squeel" stuff and let it sit overnight before installation. That's what I did. I'd take them out and re-install them as well, just to be sure.
So far, after about 600 miles, Akebono ceramic in the front and Mintex reds in the rear offer the best combo if clean/quite. (for me)

I don't like dealing with those goop packets either so I picked up a can of spray on anti squeel stuff. I put a few layers on there, let them dry for a half hour and then installed. It was still tacky when I put them on per the instructions. The new rear pads will squeek sometimes, but I'm not sure if it's the new compound or something like that.

I wonder if they can be bought...The self-adhesive pads make such a world of difference...I don't know where to even begin to look for them. I don't know about "doctoring" them up. The temperatures and the pressure they must withstand are pretty high...
I'd just re-install Mintex, and hopefully, they'll come up with rear Akebonos. :)
