im taking a Bio class about the environment, and my teacher recently told us that there is a public workshop that is going to inform us how we can convert any deisel car/truck into burning vegetable oil. The oil is the stuff that fast food joints PAY people to take off of their hands. We can go ask managers of restaurants and they can possibly pay us a few dollars for disposal, but in reality we would take it home, change it into fuel and run our car from it. I dont know the specifics but my teacher mentioned using an old water heater that yuou commonly find for free or really cheap in the recycler or something, put the used vegetable oil in, and it makes it useable for your car. I am VERRRRRRRy interested in this but couldnt make the work shop due to work, i beleive it was last friday at Mt. Sanantonio College, or near by. After reading this comment in a thread

i thought id bring it up and ask if anyone has any insight or other BMWs that can possibly be used for this conversion. With the gas prices these days this could be a very good investment and a great way to conserve. :redspot

Well, it's not that easy. You have to filter the oil first, which isn't really a quick process. I watched some TV show where they converted a dune buggy into running on used vegetable oil. It ran ok, but the filtering process took forever. I don't recall them really changing anything on the engine, but then again this was a very small and simple engine.

I actually wrote a paper on this last year, so I'll see what I can remember. To convert the vegetable oil to biodiesel you need to do some sort of process I do believe, you can't just go to Mickie D's and fill 'er up. Ok that pretty much doesn't help, but google "Biodiesel" and you should find all the info you need.

No offense, but what the heck does this have to do with BMW F/I?

I don't care for biodiesel, I use a Mr. Garbage for my energy needs.

wouldn't the biodiesel make your car's exhaust smell like golden fries....or is the refinement that good?

interesting site, seems they put alot of emphasis on national security and stuff like that over some of the more important reasons...

do diesels get decent gas mileage with this stuff? wouldn't it be a pain to track down 50 gallons of mcdonalds oil for that road trip?

i'd like to try this out but i don't drive a diesel, maybe i'll convert the fj40... would be a torque monster!
