View Full Version : turbo on E28 535?
hello! a lot of you have turbo kits on your 535 and many of you have it with stock internals and everything.but i was thinking that most of you have the 136kw (8.0 compression ratio),but i have a 160kw (10.0 compression ratio) engine and the pistons on this engine are with high dome and i think not very suitable for turbo.so i would like to know if anybody has the 160kw engine with turbo and how much power can you get from this engine with stock internals, and on what psi you can drive daily so that it wouldnt do any harm to the engine.i dynod my car today and the engine had 200 hp and 150 from the rear wheels and 290 nm of torque and its just not enough :(
greetings from Estonia :)

Lots of e28s are becoming more turboed. You can still run a turbo with your 10:1 compression, but intercooling will be key.
With my 8:1 at 10psi non-intercooled I see about 240-250rwhp and around 270-280rwtq.
My car has run about 8psi for about 20k miles, and now 10psi for a good 10k miles. The only thing I'm having trouble with now is my oil pan gasket. I'm using the same headgasket that was installed from the factory, I still haven't needed a new one.
There are only a select amount of kits out there. I have a setup from a Euro 745i. There is also www.turbochargingdynamics.com - TCD - who provides excellent kits and will help with all types of technical help.
Hope that helps

I do the oil feed via a 745i oil filter housing. It has a built in oil supply nipple for the turbo. If you're using the stock M30 oil filter housing then you might be able to tap into a certain spot on the side - It looks like a flat circle. Just tap in a nice little oil feed nipple that will fit a stainless steel oil feed line.
As for the oil return - BMW implemented on the M30B34 (pre-89') a small little ledge on the block that was used on the 745i as the oil return line. All you gotta do is: 1) Drill and tap (good luck! It's cast iron!) or 2) Drill and wedge/fit a pipe (that's what I did, and what BMW does on the 745i)
Your biggest problem will be clearance with the ABS lines, they do come up as a slight problem for some turbos. But if you are doing a custom manifold etc then you'll probably be able to move the turbo and such out of the way. Just make sure you measure precisely, there isn't too much room on that side of the engine bay to make a mistake!
