Options in the price range I want are:

-BMW X5 4.8
-Land Rover Range Rover
-Porsche Cayenne S

Can anyone give me some insight on which I should choose, and why?

Thanks

Is this coming from a BMW enthusiast standpoint or a general, unbiased standpoint? :)

Haven't had a chance to drive the Range Rover yet.

SUV? I would get a Volvo or Audi station wagon instead.

What is the intended purpose? Off road? Pavement pounder? Soccer mom? If off-roading, why type of roads? Tight trails? Mud? Boulders? If pavement pounder how many people will be in the vehicle? Any cargo? Towing a trailer? How big of a trailer? Use all year round? If so, what type of weather? Snow?

I basically want something fun that I can use all year round, but also in the snow during the winter. I have no plans on off-roading. Out of the three, I really like the interior of the Cayenne, but not really sure if thats the way to go or not.

The cayenne has been tested as being able to hold it's own off road(with the optional air suspension). The 4.8 may not fare so well.

Its also a hell of a lot faster than the Range and a good bit rarer than an X5 or a Range Rover.

I think the 4.6 and 4.8 are a lot rarer then the cayenne's. My dad has a 4.6 which i have more then put throuh its paces. I've taken it on a couple dtm drives too and i can keep up with e36's in twisty sections no prob. An ex f1 driver also said the x5 was better then the cayenne. Also keep in mind the cayenne is a beefed up VW

My friends mom got a toureg a while ago and when he had his permit he actaully disliked drivng it.

Alkiza, if you want a fast good handling suv get the 4.8. If you want a car that can go through rivers but stinks as far as on road handling get the range rover. If you want a car thats slower then the x5 but with a porsche badge, get the cayenne

The touraeg and the Cayenne are two totaly different animals.

Having drven the Cayenne S and the V8 Touraeg. The Cayenne was a fast car, a wealth of horsepower, while the touraeg couldn't even get out of it's own way.

X5 4.8 all the way...for combination of reliability, looks and maintenance...

Porsche is ugly looking hogbeast...Porsche should not be in the SUV business...Period.

Range Rover best looking IMO...but then again I don't trust Range Rovers reliability...Are they still made in England?

My order

X5 - Best combination of everything.
Range Rover - Would be my top choice if reliability was up to par w/BMW
Porsche - no comment.

The range rover, at least the current is bmw designed.

my vote goes to the rover, it does SUV right.
Having owned an X5, ableit not the 4.8, if i had to go back, i think i would've picked up a e39 wagon instead.

I think I'd hunt for a used 02 X5 4.6.
They are rare and go like stink.
That or the Cayanne, I've driven a S and they are real real nice.

if you don't need something that big, the X3 is a great little SUV. My dad has the Cayenne Turbo; granted it's fast, but the ride is WAY too stiff for an SUV.

Forgot about that...I think they just switched from BMW V8 to another engine just recently...Not sure...But if I were to buy a Range Rover I would look for ones with the BMW engine and design...

BTW if E39 was a choice here...I would too.

Yes the Range now has the Ford engine in it. It is a bored version of the 4.2 liter in the Jag.

damn, that sucks.. did they change the interior as well?
I loved the BMW verison of the range rover, though I will admit, the ford Discovery doesn't seem half bad.

S4 Avant, Outback 2.5xt, wait for the 5'er wagon :dunno

Out of all of those though - id go with the X5 [see if you can get estoril]

A bit OT: but how are you going from a e36 318 to one of those $65+k trucks?

Have you looked in or though about the Infiniti FX 35 or 45's? I just picked up an 05 FX35 and im lovin it. I also test drove the X5 and i personally like the FX better. The only thing I dont have is Navi and the 20'' wheels but im going to get the 20's in the summer. You can get a fully loaded 05 for about the same price range as the other cars you listed. Also the infiniti is still very sporty for an SUV, IMO. It rides like a car and the exhaust tone is awsome. If you havent test drove or looked at them I suggest you at least take one for a ride.

The FX35 has the 287hp V6 and the FX45 has the 315hp v8. IMO the 35 has plenty of power and the V8 is just a gass hog.
