View Full Version : Suspension for E34 M5?

What suspension mods are available for a '90 E34 M5?

All I have seen so far are H&R Sport springs and Bilstein Sport shocks.

Has anyone tried this combination? What is it like? What about w/ 17" wheels? I am looking for something that will lower the car but still be somewhat comfy for long trips etc.

Are Koni adjustables available? If so, from where?

Thanks!

You are limited if you keep the SLS.
If it's removed your car will basically be a 535 with a few stouter components. From there you have many choices for suspension mods.
Yes you can use Konis...and I recommend them.

Korman offers several setups. On most highway runs the stffer rides are not bad. Around town you tend to get beat to death.

If I leave the SLS in, and just go to H&R Sports, will the ride still be pretty reasonable? H&R Sports are advertised to be compatible with the stock SLS.

I don't necessarily need it stiffer - I just want to get ride of the nearly 2" gap up front and maybe drop the rear a li'l.

AC Schnitzer and Alpina make spring kits for the E34 that retained SLS. Neither is cheap though. I have seen some posts on E34.de about a car with the Schnitzer springs. Sounded like a well engineered package

As MBlaster said, lots of M5 owners are very, very happy with the Konis

I have a 93 M5. After MUCH research and opinions from the hardcore boys on the M5 board I've decided to go with Koni/H&R. I'm also keeping my SLS, for now. They just arrived so I'll update when I've installed them.

I was strongly recommended to avoid the bilsteins. The H&Rs will give you a 10mm drop in back and 30mm up front. I've also heard good things about the Dinan springs. Everything else I've heard bad things about.

Ive followed your thread/s on the other board, let me know how you like the set up. Mine is still totally stock and intact. I am going to learn how the car handles at the limits with the factory setup. Then I will likely go with the Koni/Vogt setup..keep us posted man.

So you're only doing Koni's in the front?

I'm getting rid of the SLS in my touring, so I need to defeat or dummy up the height sensor in the rear. I need to do some searching on the M5 board.

there are several Items to address.
1. The power steering pump should be replace with a standard 535 unit and hoses. If this not possible then recirculation needs to be accomplished.
2. The warning from the computer for suspension nedds to be shorted so there is no annoying bong.
3. Strongly reccomend camber adjusters.

Yes, this is quite a common thing to do. I'll see how I like the ride and if I'm still not happy I can do the full delete.

You can buy the sls delete kit from most bimmer parts suppliers.
The rear shocks and springs will be shiat canned for some Konis, and sport springs of some kind.

Low level, go do a search on www.m5board.com (http://www.m5board.com)

It is discussed ad nauseam there. Nixter is correct above with his statements, and he is heading down the suspension slippery slope very soon so he will be a good person to talk to when all is done!

Yes. You'll find everything you need to know and more over there. To be totally honest, I come to this board to talk style, non mechanicals, and fun. I go to the m5board when I have serious questions.

SLS hasn't a thing to do with the ride when you've installed aftermarket springs. They are simply a load leveling shock that sux and will eventually fail.
SLS is no EDC.
