Johnny, was that your first time?

At a SOLO II event yes, taking part in a track event no. I also get a lot of track time in yearly, however it is in a Crown Vic. (I'm an instructor for the state).

Who do you think? Crazy goes a long way.

30 cars in SM

Makr has played solo 2 a bit before and was 14th
Johnny has not played this game, but has "some track experience" 15th
Geoff was a total nooob and was 25th so it was at least nice to beat someone

The thing that was the best was Makr's car because of it's light mods might have been able to run in an easier class, and Johnny's 5er was on stock suspension.

So, just out of curriosity, How do they decide what class you are in? The guy I bought the M3 from said he had to race with the BAMF's , The M3 only has the DINAN reprogram and cold air intake... Any idea what class?
I gotta get out when I get some better tires.
Thanks

I didn't throw my name in, just pointed people to results :stickoutt

WRT to classing, it is rather complex. You can download the rules from here:

http://www.scca.com/_filelibrary/File/2005SoloRules.pdf

A chip + intake takes you out of stock class. Options are STU (Street Touring, must be on street tires), BSP (Street Prepared), or SM (Street Modified) for the E36 M3.

But honestly at the regional level except for a few cars, it mainly comes down to having good tires and good driving. R Compound tires (Kumho 710's or Hoosier A3S05's) will gain you more time than anything, next would be springs and shocks.

The largest improvements however come from seat time. Autox is very different than track driving, though lots of track experience helps.

The next event is in Wendover on the 23rd and 24th (two seprate events). I'll be there, and am happy to ride along or give rides (as time permits, the ride list tends to grow rapidly and I'm always owing rides from the previous event when I couldn't fit everyone in.) The one drag of having a fast car is that you spend all this money to take out weight, but then end up giving 200+ lbs passengers rides all the time. :eyecrazy But it's all good when you see the smile on their face after the run and they are saying "oh my god, oh my god." LOL.

Agree'd, I was a 170 pound guy in the passenger seat, But I have yet given it a shot, I will see when the next e-Center race is, With 2 little kid's it's hard to pull away from home.
Thanks for the info :redspot

I somehow got fourth in SM driving a relatively unfamiliar car and I had to count a run with a cone penalty as my best. Damn, I'm either very lucky or very good. Maybe a little of both, but mostly luck me thinks!

Can't wait to get the 332is back out. Getting close. Might be able to give Todd a little competition. He looks lonely out there waaaay ahead of everyone else!

I hope the BMW's keep up the strong showing at future events!!!!

With more seat time we might even start to catch up!I'm sure you will catch up fast. That just makes it more interesting for everyone else racing with you guys.

You should take Dark up on his offer to give you rides or have him run with you in your cars. I think it took me like almost a year to get a ride in his racing car. But you probably weigh less than 200+lbs and may have a better chance... :lol

Common Uli, you know it took so long because we ran in the same class and our numbers are close (you run in class and numeric order normally, the grid person was a bit more lax on Sunday), so there was no way to get you in the car.

BTW here's a in-car vid from Wendover....courses can be much more open and fast since there are not light poles and curbs.

I'm looking into getting a G-Cube from GEEZ!. I'm not sure if there is an option to compare files, like comparing your run with my run for example, analyzing where and how bad I was slacking.

I wish I would be as fast as you so people are waiting in line to get a ride. :D

Even if its not, I've got some confidence in Eric's GTi now (he'll probably let me co-drive it if needed). It should be much better with his new wheels/tires. Hoosier daddy? :devillook

Or maybe Uli will offer a co-drive? I'd loan him a wheel/tire setup that would be a bit faster than his current shoes.

Run SM, its the best class by far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The video looks like you guys are driving slow as shit. But I'm sure in real life you were movin! what gives??

chmdrm
04-14-2005, 09:35 PM
Video is real time. I think it has to do with trying to do something at 40mph that you would normally do at 10mph cause it sure feels faster when you're doing it.

With 4.10 gears I never got to the very top of 2nd even on the longer straights. I think Johnny tried going to 3rd once but found it slowed him down.

All of us were going fast enough to have the tires screaming, hell I even plowed right through a cone at the exit of a corner on my last run because I couldn't get the nose planted.

You need to come play, so much fun.

DarkGift
04-14-2005, 11:42 PM
I hit my rev limiter on the back east to west straight every run after the 1st. That should be around 64 in my car. Doesn't sound that fast, but try running up your driveway at 60+ mph and parking in the garage as the door is coming down and you kinda get an idea of what autox is like.

chmdrm
04-14-2005, 11:53 PM
I was not looking down at the gauges but I don't think I was going that fast.

Best guess by the motor sound is 5 to 6 grand in 2nd at the end of the straight which is closer to 55 mph :(

This might also explain the differnece in out times.

BTW, looks like Sunday will be a "Mock ProSolo" which means you'll run side-by-side on two mirrored courses. Not wheel-to-wheel, one person is on the left course and one on the right, then you flip. Combine to the two times and whoever has the lowesest best left time + lowest right time wins. (Note our T&S software doesn't support this, so it should be "interesting" to make it work. It does support two day events, so we'll have to use day 2 for one of the courses.)

Saturday should be a traditional day with a larger course, but is not a points event.

chmdrm
04-15-2005, 11:40 AM
Makr and I will be there both days. Trying to talk others into coming.

The ProSolo thing sounds fun and closer to my drag racing roots but what I need more then anything is just seat time so any course will work for me.

The real Pro will be here in May and has Xmas tree lights, your reaction time counts etc. First one to hit a perfect .500 wins money, something like $100.
The "drag" part of it is only a couple 100 feet or so, enough to get into 2nd gear and hit the course.

It is a National event and requires SCCA membership however.

I have my membership forum printed out and filled in. Going to post office today.

A .500 light is easier then the driving part for me ... well maybe not as I've never hit one. Done 2 x .499s however.

About as close to perfect as you can get and still suck.

Uli
04-15-2005, 04:12 PM
Just showing my complete racing ignorance: What is the deal with the 0.500? What does this messaure and why is exactly 0.5 better than 0.4 or 0.6? :help

chmdrm
04-15-2005, 04:27 PM
On most Sportsman trees .500 is a perfect light. .499 is a red light and you lose.

If I remember right the lights are .500 apart as they count down and the timer starts as it turns off the last yellow and turns on the green. Break the beams sooner then .500 after the last yellow and you are DQ'd for a false start and the red light comes on and not the green.

In the real world leave on the last yellow, if you see the green you lost. The time it takes for your foot to react to your brain, and the car to move once the pedel is planted most times is more then .500 seconds. A good light is .550 and under.

In thousands of 1/4 mile runs over the years, I've never had a .500 light. Two .499s but the best non red light I've had is a .510. In the groove I can do .540s all day.

GSBMW325is

Just FYI: Our Mock Prosolo won't have the xmas tree lights. It will be some guy standing there using flags or arms to signal the start! Of course, your time won't start until you trip the timing beams and red lights are not an issue (you could technically sit at the line all day after the guy waved the flag, and still beat the other side).

Why doesn't the flag (or any other viable start signal) start the time instead? Still not perfect, but probably closer to the ProSolo spirit I would think.

If you are talking Solo 2, a stock WRX STI is classed in AS according to the SCCA online rulebook: http://www.scca.com/Solo/Index.asp?IdS=006BAB-49ECBF0&x=050|070&~=
Depending on your modifications, it may end up in SM.
